Well, seeing as this is getting closer to home, I decided to take time to ask what you think.

The Facts:

On March 6, 2009 the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games reported that total spending on the games was generally as much as that of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, which was about $15 billion.

Other sources, however, estimated that approximately $40 billion had been spent on the Games, which would make it the most expensive Olympic Games by a wide margin. (Source)

A 100,000-strong security force of armed police, commandos and other troops is stationed around the city. The authorities have installed 300,000 surveillance cameras and sited anti-aircraft missiles next to the Bird's Nest. ID checks have been stepped up. People who give police detailed evidence of a major security threat to the Beijing Olympics could receive a reward of between 10,000 and 500,000 yuan (five times the usual maximum amount)

Some countries, the Olympics can be successful, like China, which even with this high amount, had a surplus, but in other places, like Montreal, faced billions of debt, that took 30 years to pay off.

So, is it worth the cost? Debate.

Bump. =]

Someone reply.

Nope. They aren't worth it.

I hate the cost of the new buildings--the olympic village, and things of that nature....The extra police protection, all that. I'm totally against them. A big waste of time, if you ask me.

Do you feel there should still be a venue for top athletes, just not at the level it is played at..; with billions spent? Or just scrape it completely?

I'd say scrap it completely. If a team wants to do exibition games in another country, then OK, but no. I hate the whole idea of it.

The Olympics is the only time when all the nations of our world come together in competition. I think it's great, and really necessary. There are things we spend more money on (Iraq War) that are WAY less essential and definitely don't bring anyone together.

If anything brings countries together...or apart it's the Olympic games.

If countries want to satisfy their inner pride and waste a shit load of tax payers money so be it.

Better than wasting it on some corrupted billionare looking to place buildings on land banned by the state.
