When a user askes about a banned user on your forum do you provide a explantion of why they are banned or just say something like sorry i cant tell you or ignore the message?

If a user asks me why a person is banned, I just politely tell them that it's none of their business why a user is banned. If a staff member asks me, I would just politely tell them that they should send me a PM and I will explain to them in private why a person is banned. The whole board does not need to know why anyone is banned.

People only tend to ask this question when forum owners go out of their way to show that someone is banned. Such as placing a strike through line in their user name or giving them a special rank, rank color or rank image letting everyone know they were banned.

If you leave the banned appearing like nothing has changed on their account, you can usually avoid this question. Even if it does come up after that, you can simply say that its a matter better left between the banned user and the administration.

I'm one of those tolerant people. You've got to do a whole lot before being banned by me.

However, when members ask, tell them. Don't go into detail, but tell them Bob Doe broke a rule and he is facing consequences. And depending on the severity, will return soon.

As far as staff members, they should be the first to know. Why say it in a PM when there's a private forum?

i've never been asked that, but usually you can find something that made the person banned. on one topic on my suikocross a nincompoop decided to join and post radom stuff, he was already banned on my now closed one more chance to wish forum so i just banned him becuase i knew he was going to start trouble which he was starting by just saying he lie'ks mudkips and that it's news.

but there is some evidence on what happend to some banned users ( especially spambots).

but if someone does ask i will tell them what happend, i mean they are just wondering.

I would provide a short explanation as to why they were banned and if they kept asking why or wanted more information I would ignore their PM's.

I usually explain it in detail to everyone so no one bugs me. I don't exactly ban all that often in fact I only banned two users in the four years I owned a board so yeah it's not exactly an everyday occurrence. XD

I find that you can work with most people as bans really get used more often then they need to be simply because no one wants to listen or work with anyone on resolving conflict. They rather just use the moderation tools to avoid it and it only leads to more headaches if anything.
