Blackface, on Australian TV?

For Michael Jackson? I doubt it. I think it's just the act name.

Well I was a little offended. They could have done the jackson five without painting their faces dark black and making Michael look overly white like a mime or something. I'm not sure if it was meant to come off as racist or anything but Blackface routines were originated in America during slavery times. As said in the article, that would never make it to tv here.

I saw that on the news. Harry Connick JR was a judge on that show, I think he handled the situation really well. He didn't get nasty, but did explain that he was offended and thought that particular act would offend most Americans.

But it's on Australian show...Why do Americans matter so?

Obviously they do matter, otherwise they wouldnt have an american actor on the show as a judge. I'm sure Americans live in Austrailia too. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion.

Also why did they feel the need to amplify the skin color's of the group. They could have easily just dressed like the jacksons and did the musical number all the same.

The issue is racial, and blackface was in Australia too disgfustingly.

Thiat is the issue here, not how it affected the American community.

Well, I can only reply as an American and how I saw it. I didn't realize you only wanted opinions from Australians.

LOL.

I'm saying it's not exclusively an American issue, so we shouldn't be making it one.

Sorry about my poor spelling in the post you quoted too.

No problem with the spelling, it happens...lol.

And no this isn't just an issue with Americans--but unfortunately

that's what Nebulous and I both are. Maybe someone from another country will give their viewpoint shortly.

I mentioned the racial problems I saw in my posts. I didnt make it into an exclusive American-issue argument. However I am an american and I am giving my american point of view. Please tell us how you would like to debate this topic if our answers aren't to your liking.

In American, from what I understand there is a lot more tension.

In Australia, we do have racism (unfortunately) but things in general seem to be a lot more lax.

Question.. Why a smiley face after stating there is more racial tension in America? Seems odd.

Anyways, different parts of america are... different. There is 50 different states here. You cant really generalize it as a whole. Where I live there isnt any racial tension at all. It would be kind of hard to be a racist where I live as there is people from all over the world here. In fact, in my town, white people are the minority.

I don't know if racial tension is worse in America than other places--simply because I don't live there--however, there are those that like to play the race card regardless of the circumstance.

I found that awesome.

The fact that so many people give a damn disappoints me. It's a horrible show and who cares if they pull a racist stunt? Just go on with your lives and stop caring about being politically correct.

that's how a real australian sees it.
