Should cameras be placed in courtrooms so that criminal trials can be televised?

Invasion of privacy? What if the person turns out to be innocent? Your thoughts? Discuss.

So it's not right in big cases like OJ Simpson? Or still just the outcome is okay? Don't you feel people have the right to know more the how instead of the one or two word answer what? Or do you think that it is not society's place, and they should just let the court take it's normal routine, and just give a verdict?

Well they should film it, but not release it to the public...

I know if I had got into trouble, I wouldn't want the world to be watching my court case..

So they should never be released to the public? Not even in high-profile cases? What if you watching the video can lead to other evidence leading to that person's innocence?

Those are official court documents (I know, I was a court reporter at one time) So, yeah--it's public record. Depositions, on the other hand, can be video or just a transcript--but those are usually not public record--unless they have been entered into evidence in the case.

Do you feel it should stay that way; as public documents. I feel it does more good than harm. I'd rather be embarrassed, but have the knowledge to know someone out there might see this, and lead to the conviction, or release of a criminal/wrongfully convicted.

That's part of our judicial system--a very big part. All cases are public (unless it's juvenile--which are sealed)

Your lawyer can cite these other cases to help your defense. Yes, they should be kept public. If they weren't public, you would never know if a person was getting a fair trial or not. If it was all sealed, how would I know if some lawyer really tried to give a person a good defense or not. How would you know if someone was convicted on trumped up evidence or it was a 'real' conviction.

If a defendant says no cameras...then no cameras.

Take a moment to wonder how much money OJ made off that trial.

I guess you're right with that one... but they should still video tape it and then not give the defendant the tapes afterwards. and if they're innocent they can destroy the tapes.
