I get holiday pay, so I get something. I could technically ask for an excusal for the holiday. I'd rather get the extra pay.

Yeah I'd get excused for Thanksgiving and Christmas, who cares about 4th of july?
We lost him in 2018 - then 8 months later, I lost my oldest one. I had 4 at one stage, I only have the 1 left now - he's about 10/11
Aww, RIP to them! Losing pets is hard. I'm sure you gave them a great life though!

My boys were 15, 12 and 9 when I lost them. We have Devon left, who's about 11 now. :)

With my seniority, that doesn't happen. I have to work most of the holidays.
I'd just call in sick and take the write-up if it was a holiday I really wanted to be off for. I used to have to do that at an old job I had, when I worked in retail. They'd write me up twice every year, on thanksgiving and Christmas.

Hope Devon is doing well and lives a long time!

He's still my little looney tune - love him to pieces. And the cats too, of course - I can't miss out the cats, heaven forbid!

Ironically, they can't write me up for calling in on those holidays because they can't charge me leave for them.
