It's how I learned. Took every board I setup, went through every style file or template and learned as much as I could about how to do things, then vB3 introduced conditionals, so I learned all about conditionals in templates...fun times. Eventually you see it's pretty easy to manipulate things and make a nice, unique style.
I used to do all that but it's not worth it anymore. :/

Understandable, it's harder and harder to put the effort in for minimal gains

What gives people the idea to try to sell their shitty looking MyBB themes for $25+

Well another unlucky part of my day. I did a minor mistake, but I think it's pretty important to my client, and I don't know how to explain it to him :(

Honesty is always the best way forward. Even if you have to admit to a mistake and work to make amends, you will do better in the long run than making up some kind of excuse. Minor mistakes happen, it's a part of life!

Conditionals is one thing that would be nice to have in MyBB, their "template engine" is so much more primitive (although it was similarly accessible and easy to mess with at least.) MyBB really was very much inspired by VB3 in a lot of ways, and VB3's influence went far beyond just MyBB, I see evidence of its inspiration across a variety of different forum platforms that have come since. It seems like a bit of a shame that vBulletin went through two separate ground-up rewrites since, and ultimately ended up with VB5 which was arguably a lot worse than the products it was designed to replace.

Some of the newer software that the development world has come up with has created a lot more bloat and a lot more boilerplate work that needs to be done to get up and running. Sometimes simpler software is nice because it's easy to tinker with, which means a much smaller learning curve to get started. That's how I ended up learning web design and PHP, and I owe a lot of that to older software platforms that were easy to customize.
