In your opinion how should forum debates be handled?

Should they contain solid resource links or well known facts. Can debaters be augmentative and what composure and level of respect should they maintain.

In short, debate on the image of a perfect debater

A debate's standards should be left to those engaging in debate, and those observing it. It is a debate, the derived credibility can be augmented by sources, etc., but ultimately it is up to observers and those partaking in debate to judge credibility and the strength of an argument. If one resorts to vitriolic language to make their point, it is again up to those that are debating, and the observers to judge what it adds or subtracts to the case that one makes.

My opinion only, but those who are so angry inside and insecure in their stance (while name-calling) should be eliminated from all debates. We know that once someone succumbs to name-calling, they've lost it. A pity.

I've been on discussion boards since 9/11 and have come across a few worthy opponents who held different views. I was able to learn from them and thank them, wherever they are. They opened my eyes.

However, when an azzz comes on and immediately gets into name-calling because they have no appreciation for diverse opinions, they are shooting themselves in the foot. If someone is firm in their own beliefs, they are able to state them precisely and politely and let it go at that. That's what I appreciate.

Good day!

To me, the whole purpose of a debate is to educate or be educated. Before going into any debate it's best that you have a good knowledge base of the subject being debated. I also think you should be prepared to back up any facts. If you are too emotionally involved in a debate subject then you shouldn't enter the debate as your emotions are not not going to allow you to think clearly. Emotionally charged words and personal attacks have no place in a debate and only cause anger and frustration. I've seen many great debate threads get closed due to a member attacking another member instead of attacking the subject in the debate.
