Malware has been an issue for PC users ever since the internet has been around. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, describes it as;

“Malware, short for malicious software, is software designed to infiltrate a computer without the owner's informed consent. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. The term computer virus is sometimes used as a catch-all phrase to include all types of malware, including true viruses”.

So after searching the internet for a trusted way to eradicate malware from your computer I found one or two FREE online scans that are simple to use and you can control where the scan operates and what files you want searched for malware, you can also set the scan for all files and folders or drives.

Eset Online Scanner

The first of these is Eset.com http://www.estset.com/onlinescan which I consider the best of the best. Based on the same technology as Esetsmart security anti-virus software, this online security scanner can be used to clean up your PC. Most web browsers are supported and, after a quick download, a smartly designed window prompts you to choose the types of malware to scan for and which drives and folders to target.

You can scan your whole system or just the items you select, and check inside archives, such as zip files, or skip them to save time. After setting the options, of which there is a good selection, the scanner and malware definitions are downloaded. These total just 28MB – less than half the size of our second selected scanner (see F-Secure). Which means Eset starts scanning faster than most rivals. In fact, it’s well into the scan before others have finished downloading definitions. After scanning there are options to either remove all the quarantined malware in one fell swoop or browse the files that have been quarantined and examine the threats that were detected.

Performance 5/5. Ease of use 5/5. Features 4/5.

F-Secure online Scanner

F-Secure online scanner functions like a traditional anti-virus and anti-spyware software and features a similar range of options. http://bit.ly/fsec225 It downloads a small file that presents a simply designed window offering three types of scan; you can choose either a quick scan that looks at the locations most likely to harbor malware, a full scan that examines all drives and files on your system, or you can select which items you want to have checked.

The impressive selection of scanning options lets you enable or disable spyware scanning, detect rootkits, examine all files or just programs and documents, and skip or look inside archives, such as zip files. This is exactly what you want from an online scanner.

Performance 4/5. Features 5/4. Ease of use 5/5.

Bitdefender Online Scanner

There’s no preset “Quick Scan” in Bitdefender’s online scanner, http://bit.ly/bit225 you’re by selecting only the items that you scanned. You can also select every drive attached to your computer in order to perform a full scan. The cleaning options link lets you choose whether to open email archives, scan all files or just programs and open archives or skip them. You can select actions to take, such as to report, disinfect or delete infections.

You can also choose a second action, so if a file can’t disinfected, it will be deleted or reported – or you’ll be prompted for an action. Around 60MB of definition files downloaded before the scan starts which slows it down. But Bitdefender is not significantly slower when compared to its main rivals.

Performance 4/5. Features 4/5. Ease of use 3/5.

Other online Scanners include but not limited to;

House Call http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

Panda Activescan http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan/index/

Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Symantec Security http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp

Remember that some online virus scans must be run by an administrator of your system. I do hope that these are of use to you; if not then please pass this information onto someone that you know can make use of it, Thank You.

Thanks for the great informative post.

The eset link doesnt work.

I have windows vista and it always prompts me before anything is going to be installed. It will not let anything auto install. My virus program (avast) and other program, spybot search and distroy are keeping me virus /malware free at the moment.
