I don't like it, but often there's no option and if one won't let go, then that's controlling psychopath behavior often due to jealousy.
And, of course, having kids makes things worse because it's hard on them.

I believe that your own happiness matters too. And wrt kids... Someone said to me once, "kids can better come FROM a broken family than be IN a broken family", and that hit deep. It was something that set me on my way to choose myself too. The other "final motivation" was... Is it so much better for kids to have no mother at all or one they see part-time? Because that was where I was at that point. Trying to end things about every month, because I felt so bad in the situation.
