Domain Extensions: The Best & Worst

When starting a forum, blog, website, etc. you need a domain. It may be a subdomain, but you still need it. With so many sites on the internet now, finding a domain that fits your project can be tough. How do you deal with this? What do you do if you're ideal domain or extension is taken? What extension (.com, .net. org, etc.) do you prefer at first pick? What extensions would you not use at all? There are plenty to choose from, but 'most' of them aren't really worth using imo. Your thoughts?

It would all depend on the project.

For open source or free things I would prefer a .org or .net domain. For most other things a .com domain is easiest as it is of course the most popular.

What I wouldn't use (probably)... .biz, .name, .aero, .gov, .xxx. Anything that doesn't fit, is too hard for people to remember, or just looks bad.



I would like to have something on the .ee TLD myself

When the 'new' batch of top level domains was released my host sent me an email saying I could reserve a .xxx site for the 'adult story' site.



I wrote back and told them that they were ready to appear on the Letterman show as that was the funniest thing I'd ever seen from them.



I never heard back.
