Several times. I usually catch on before it gets to the point where any actual harm can be done or emotional well-being damaged. I don't quite understand why people do it; but, I usually try to video chat with someone before meeting them in person to verify that they're who they claim to be and it also tends to save time because you can judge how well the conversation will flow between you in person.
Yeah I think I have been catfished before. I dated this "girl" back in 2009. I say "girl" because I really don't know if they were a girl or not. I met them on Myspace, and I'm sure they were using fake images of some model. I was gullible enough to believe this person was the girl in the picture. Anyways I asked her a few times to talk on the phone but "she" would always use some excuse, saying "she" was too busy, etc and that never happened. I eventually just broke it off with "her" because I figured she was catfishing me. Still never did figure out who the person behind that account was.
So what sites were you using that you had this happen so many times?
The free dating apps like OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, etc. It's hit or miss. Not all of them are bots or catfishing, it usually can be determined by their responses to questions and the pictures they send you.
Normally if they're not willing to meet in person after a week to verify if they're real, they're most likely a fraud. One girl told me online that she didn't meet anyone after a month and I blocked her. I don't tolerate bullshit from anyone. If they can't meet then they have no business being on a dating website. I would also like to add that if they refuse to give you their number and just want to use Snap Chat or WhatsApp, they're most likely a fraud. Just move on and don't waste anymore time on them.
I've learned most of these lessons, it just took some time. I try to give a lot of them the benefit of the doubt. I'm running into the issue with girls not responding after a few days or disappearing without a word. I understand people get busy; but, if you're not interested any longer, then just say so and move on.

I think the catfish is the weaker person. I don't think there's anything weak about wanting to protect yourself from someone whose intentions I believe to be malicious. I wouldn't call myself being a weak person if I feel that someone is a fraud and wants to take advantage of me. We have every right to protect ourselves if we get a bad feeling that the person we're talking to isn't being up front and honest about who they are. Especially if you have kids. I just want to know who it is I'm really talking to. I believe that is the right thing to want. There are women on these websites that are unstable and toxic to be around. You really have to protect yourself from these kinds of people when you go online.
Explain your logic behind this?
How does wanting to know the truth of the person you're speaking to make you weak? Does it make you weak to want to feel affection, to want to be loved, to want to have someone to come to every night? Does it make you weak when you see a cute (in the eye of the beholder) girl start talking to you and you begin to let your walls down, open up to them and gradually let them into your heart, only to then have them ask you for money, for help with this or that, etc.
There is nothing weak about the person being catfished. I agree with @Terminated about the person catfishing being the weak person. I've had women ashamed of how they look who hide their appearance or using an older picture of themselves where they may have been fifty pounds thinner. I try to be honest with who I'm talking about minus details I don't feel comfortable sharing online.
I've developed a keen eye for these people and when they refuse to take a picture doing a pose you can't find a picture of someone online doing or writing my name on a piece of paper (which I had someone Photoshop it on a piece of paper)
