What is something you think everyone should have installed on their computer or laptop?

Adblock Plus - Blocks annoying ads on webpages and in videos. Surf faster and safer.

Avast! Free Antivirus - Antivirus software.

CCleaner - A freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. For Windows and Mac.

For Windows users, Malwarebytes is a key piece of kit and also VLC.

For Mac, VLC and OnyX.

VLC is a great choice
For Anitvirus using a free on AVG. I use Bitdefender.

CCleaner
GIMP (Free image editor in my opinion as good a Photoshop)
Filezilla
Steam

CCleaner is a good program for the tech-savvy, but it's extremely easy to break it if you aren't careful. Definitely not something I'd recommend to anyone who isn't confident in the use of a computer.

CCleaner is meant for everyone. However the registry cleaner (Option) is useless and it doesn't speed up your computer at all, it does more harm than any good.

I can't feel the love for VLC and I uninstalled CCleaner recently.

That's how much things have changed since this thread was started eight years ago.

VLC has been surpassed by other players for most things, and CCleaner has sold their soul for paid subscriptions.

Both still have their place, but they're not going to be anybody's first recommendation.

I've got both malware and cleanup programs on my computer but I also make sure to take it into the shop every so often, especially to have the memory upgraded and to cleanup the occasional bit of dust from the machine.

Can't stand VLC.
