Fora are an avenue for social interaction. The body they may inhabit will evolve and change time to time - but whether it is literally The Forum, that was built in Rome, or a virtual bulletin board like environment that we have now - Fora will always exist in some manner as long as there are Humans (and even simpler life have Fora, so I don't think they'll be going anywhere, soon).

I think they will always be around. Most people like the anonymousness of posting on forums so there will always be a place for it in the world. Its does not have to be as personal as something like facebook where posting personal pictures and using your real name is the standard.

I agree. I have a feeling that one of these years general discussion forums will dominate any other genera of forums. Besides, how often do you join up with a community where you are allowed to talk just about anything you want? That doesn't happen very often. Another genere that willl most likely survive are really good promotion forums, as Webmasters and forum owners are more likely to want tips on how to make their own forums better and what-not.
I believe forums will always be around in some form or another. They give people a place to interact with each other. People like to share their hobbies, and interests with others that share the same. People look to forums for information when they have a question about something. Some people just plain like to talk a lot. There will always be a place for forums.
I think the specialize forums that really cater to a niche will survive. The general discussion ones probably will not. my reasoning for this is because social networking sites like facebook, twitter, myspace, etc. really replace these kinds of forums.
I think that eventually, they will end or see very, very limited activity. I think there will be some community for it, but I think that most newer forums probably won't be able to see themselves still active in a few years.
