Never played yellow, wasn't it mostly the same?

Sort of. You got Pikachu as a starter and it followed you around and wouldn't evolve. Your rival gets an Eevee which can evolve into any of the three evolutions depending on some stuff. You also get all three other starters over the course of the game.

I like the new one, but my favourite was the generation Rayquaza was introduced. Can't remember when. I think it was Ruby.

Third: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald.

Also that Pikachu in Yellow could learn Surf, but there was a special trick you had to do in order to get that to happen.
