What are your ways of fixing a minor problem on your computer? I usually just system restore.

I normally fix my PC myself. Everything from replacing a case fan, to gutting the whole thing and adding all new hardware. :)

How old is your computer?
Hmm....well the newest items are 3 case fans and a new power supply. Everything else is kinda old (in computer time), but it still hauls ass and I can play almost any game. :)

Nice, hope your science experiment continues to run smoothly :P

hehe I always have fun on my PC. I met my g/f on-line as well. :)

Before you give up and buy a new computer, (like I did which did not fix the problem ) check your monitor.

Most people do nowadays. :p

 Good advice! What was wrong with your monitor?
I don't know exactly....old age? My computer kept crapping out, tried what I knew (not very much, really) to try to get it to working right; no dice. Finally just went to Costco & got a new one...this was about three years ago, so details are hard to recall. Got that computer going & it was doing the same thing...just randomly dying, had to push the start button repeatedly, it would be okay for a little while then just conk out.
Paranoia was REALLY setting in by then.
Then took the old one (maybe only about 7-years-old) to a local computer shop - - - the guy said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the computer.
So, we hooked my old computer up to my husband's monitor & it worked fine; hooked up the new computer to husband's monitor...worked fine.
And so, back to Costco. and here I am, "back on the road again".

SO....as far as I could see, that monitor was working beautifully; I do not know why it was killing computers. :dontknow:

Process of elimination, glad you figured it out! Did you return the new computer?

#Hoarders :p
He's definitely not; I do seem to have a Y2K collector syndrome = "but we might need that sometime". He thwarts that as much as possible.

That is very, very odd. A monitor is merely an output device. It doesn't send much info back to the computer. That's like your mouse battery died and now your computer randomly crashes. This is illogical! lol

Actually, come to think of it, I recently had a weird issue with my PC. Whenever I tried to use either of my USB 3.0 ports, the wireless mouse cursor would get choppy. Unplug the device, the mouse works normally. What the freak? hehe

A long time ago in a tech job far far away. I had a Windows 98 First Edition machine that was running on a Pentium Pro.

As you may remember, 98 first edition was an operating system that SHOULD NOT have been released. It was unstable, subject to random blue screens for no reason, and was NOT compatible with any outside programs.

So the IT guy at the job installed 98 Second Edition over it, but the on board bios was still looking for first edition on boot. He gave me a bit of voodoo to do every Monday when I turned the things on (I was told to only power it down on Friday). And it would Usually work. But it still had some issues.

I taped the following sign to the side of the case, and, believe it or not, after that, it had fewer issues. To the point that it was still in routine service until just before I retired some ten years later.

There is
NOTHING WRONG
with this machine
that CAN NOT
be fixed with a
FIRE AXE!
