Fixing your computer

Leave it to me to have some unique problem.
There is
NOTHING WRONG
with this machine
that CAN NOT
be fixed with a
FIRE AXE!

I build all my systems. So when I have issues, I fix it myself.
How many systems do you have?

In this room 2 desktops and 2 laptops. I have parts to build 2 more sitting here. Waiting on Intel ARC video cards. Going to start messing with a 3D printer soon.
Thats cool but why do you need so many computers? Most people just have one :P

3D printers are cool @SpookyZalost was telling us about his recently.

A long time ago in a tech job far far away. I had a Windows 98 First Edition machine that was running on a Pentium Pro.

As you may remember, 98 first edition was an operating system that SHOULD NOT have been released. It was unstable, subject to random blue screens for no reason, and was NOT compatible with any outside programs.

So the IT guy at the job installed 98 Second Edition over it, but the on board bios was still looking for first edition on boot. He gave me a bit of voodoo to do every Monday when I turned the things on (I was told to only power it down on Friday). And it would Usually work. But it still had some issues.

I taped the following sign to the side of the case, and, believe it or not, after that, it had fewer issues. To the point that it was still in routine service until just before I retired some ten years later.
I've used every version of Windows excerpt for 8. Started with like DOS 1. Then MS-OS 3 (Windows 3.1 in there somewhere), then 6, then Windows 95, etc. My favorite is 10! Love it!

You trying to build a mesh network or just setting up a bunch of varied systems for compatibility?
I usually build my desktops and fix problems when they arise. But I keep a variety of systems around and maintained for compatibility.

For example my modern linux deskop has a parallel/Serial PCI-E card specifically so I can do file transfers to my MCA based IBM PS/2 model 50, which has a 286 CPU and supports a lot of old DOS software and hardware.

I have a windows XP computer I built for stuff linux struggled with and at the time modern windows would not run. (I haven't used windows 10 outside work in nearly a year now?

I've got an Imac G3 800mhz for power PC stuff as well as an emulator on my linux machine.

and an intel Mac laptop again for compatibility.

There's more in the basement that I'm working on fixing up including a SPARC server.

I like what I like. hehe

One desktop is mine. The other is my wife's. I use more than her. One laptop is hers. The other is a company unit. I am going to use one of the two that are not built for the 3D printer. Alot of people turn to me to build systems for them. I stay away from the cheap stuff now. Most of the rigs I build are 1500.00 to 5000.00.

you prefer intel or AMD for CPUs?

I am OK using either of them. My main rig right now is Intel. Sold one of the AMD rigs I had about a month or so ago. I build what people ask for or what they like. What they heard was good. How about you?

I usually go for number of cores and threads over per core performance... so I usually go for AMD. but that's mostly because I compile my software so the more cores/threads I can distribute that over the faster it is.

I don't know exactly....old age?
This is what happened to my monitor. It was so old that none of the buttons worked on it barely. The monitor always also stayed on and the power off and on button was busted. I am guessing due to that plus old age it finally caved. Got a way better and newer monitor which was first released in 2017, but is obviously brand new.

@SpookyZalost , I just saw your link to your (WIP) topic. Outstanding write up so far. I will have to finish reading it later tonight. Is that your site?

Yeah, I have built a number of AMD rigs for compiling. Build a number of rigs for people that when they open a file, they go to lunch and when they get back after an hour they still have to wait 2 or 3 more mins for the file to open. Once I showed them these files could be openned in under 3 minutes, they ordered a few rigs. hehe

It was not expensive at least, but think it is at least 1080p or so.

Thats good. Actually I have a little 720p TV in my kitchen and the picture / video quality on that things looks great still. Just as good as my HD & 4K TV's / monitors.
