Your friend is very lucky to have gotten out of this without serious injuries. I hope he had collision on this car and that the person/people in the SUV weren't injured. Man, his insurance rates are going to go through the roof because of this!

They can, but I've been told by qualified people that it doesn't happen nearly as often or as easily as some may think. Certainly not in the frequency in which it happens in Michael Bay movies. It takes a particular set of circumstances to have it happen, and that's where my knowledge gets fuzzy...I believe something (fuel tank) has to get punctured in a specific sort of way so that something can happen specifically with oxygen (Yes, I know how a normative combustive process works, it's not an obvious transference that happens in a car combustion case...)
