Google has killed its Firefox toolbar, prompting users to complain via the search giant’s blog.

The toolbar, which Firefox users could download as an add-on to the service, and contained features such as Google Translate, will no longer be available via the latest versions of Firefox.

Google is understood to be keeping all other arrangements with Firefox the same, including its funding of the not-for-profit browser.

The Google toolbar will now only be supported by versions of the browser up to and including Firefox 4.

The announcement, which was made via a Google blog, said: “As we all know, over the past few years, there has been a tremendous amount of innovation in the browser space. For Firefox users, many features that were once offered by Google Toolbar for Firefox are now already built right into the browser. Therefore, while Google Toolbar for Firefox works on versions up to and including Firefox 4 only, it will not be supported on Firefox 5 and future versions.”

However, in the comments box below the blog, Firefox users vented their frustration about the change, with some accusing Google of trying to make people shift browsers to Chrome.

I like Google Chrome, it's easily the number two browser to Firefox, and this toolbar thing really doesn't bother me but it feels kinda pointless, I don't see people switching to Chrome for a toolbar.

Never used the toolbar, tbh. I like the new feel of FF. It's more simple, sorta like Chrome. But a bit better, since I don't think Chrome has Adblock plus
