there's not many plug-ins for mybb 1.8 or 1.8.1...

was the upgrade a must or just a choice, because security is pretty much the same but less less forum goodies (mods/plug-ins)...

This I agree with, but they hopefully will have a couple good releases with in the next coming months. I'm hoping...

I've managed to get some old 1.6 plugins working for 1.8 with fairly simple modifications. I'll agree that the selection for 1.8 is limited though. It seems a lot of good developers are leaving the community, but we have a few new ones coming as well, so hopefully the selection will recover a bit within a few months.

Maybe all the forums that got hacked recently were using the same plugin & it has a security hole in it?

I have to wonder. I'm not sure what plugin it would be though. I know some people were hacked for insecure passwords, but these are probably just people with a little experience who can exploit various vulnerabilities. I know promotionzone.net (a once popular promotion forum that is now non-existent) was hacked and defaced due to a skype plugin vulnerability, so it doesn't have to be something big.

Well I tracked the Shade and Spook who hacked me to a hacking Bitcoin/Credit Card alliance and I noticed yesterday then today after my hack a ip that was constantly on my Online Users but was always at a "unknown location". I back tracked the IP to some bogus media company with an empty website page.

Talked to two staff at MyBB and said that it was most likely on my end , not my carelessness of handing out information, but a plug-in.

Was the "unknown location" a link? If it is, you can click it to see what page the IP is visiting. If it's just sitting there for hours, I almost wonder if it's a brute force script, but MyBB is pretty good about protecting from that stuff generally. Someone attempted to do that on my forum twice in the past month, did not get far at all. :P

the mybb staff and i also believe it was a plug-in...

but which one could it be...

but just know that there's many ways to hack, and to hack a site or forum...

with forums, yes, it's easy to hack through mods/plug-ins where the creators inserted a gateway...

others can just hack through without needing a gateway...

Whoever did mine had limited access . They were able to change my template and banner, but left no log.

If you ask me, it's poor excuse for people, probably teenagers thinking they are funny.

Then they demand Bitcoin or Paypal for your recent database.

Dafuq!?

that's the internet and this age for you...

and people think technology and the internet is so great and safe?

wonder how many people are getting robbed via the inter-webs and technology?

yet the world's elite wants all things electronically...

and people are gullible to fall for it...

this age in the human's timeline is a maze of uncertainty due to bringing forth the virtual world into play that people shall exploit...

No, we just did a software update to have the most up to date and secure version of MyBB.

I like the new dark theme.

I have no real opinion on plugins, as I can't think of very much that Off Topix actually used that is memorable to me. Awards I guess? Aside from that...
 
Strangely, this hacking situation has brought me back to Off Topix! Every cloud and all that!
 
Why wouldn't you upgrade your forums regularly? It's kinda a good practice to keep the place as secure as possible so this doesn't happen in the first place. :P

not just the awards, simple things that make a forum unique from the others as well as small things like bbcode and smily options in the fast reply, etc.!

because 1.8 and 1.8.1 is new and don't have all the options that 1.6 has...

just because there's a newer version of something doesn't mean it's not hack-able or safer...
