Fear of snakes is one of the common fear in animals, including humans. I have killed snakes twice, both were common krait. That was in my farmhouse many years ago. I had no option except to kill the snakes because they had entered the house and we could not chase them outside.
Yes.
But not harmless "garden variety" snakes; I'll pick those up & throw them in the bushes so that the "mousers" can't get to them & 'play' with them to death. Harmless snakes are not a threat to me; rattlers are. Rattlesnakes are the only vipers I know of that are common around here.
I killed a rattle snake once. One time we were having a family get-together out in the country at one of our family member's houses. Saw my daughter and her little cousins all standing around something (they were all toddlers back then) and I went over to see what they were looking at. It was a rattle snake about to strike. Shoo'ed them all away and did away with the snake with a shovel. Thankfully there was one nearby.

My step dad always had a gun on him. Anytime we were outside playing and a copperhead was sitting in the yard, he'd come out and shoot it. He's been bitten several times and hospitalized before so I can't say that I blame him.

Some people, if they commonly "stumble across" snakes carry shotgun shells in their pistolas; or a sawed-off shotgun; others are just really good shots.
