Do you give money to homeless people on the street? Why or why not?

I never give money to the homeless, but food and any sanitary items I may have with me upon meeting one. Giving them money, could turn to a double edged sword, as they may use it for drugs, etc.

The only way I'd give money to the homeless, is if it were obvious that they're not drug addicts. Which is something you can almost always tell when it comes to these people. Regardless, I always try to help.

Sometimes, its easier just to hand them some change than fell all awkward by saying no.

No, but I have given them food. It's difficult to tell which ones are going to use it for basic necessities or drugs and alcohol, so I just give what I can in terms of specific items if I have anything on me.

No. I always think it's rather suspicious since they should be getting money from the government.

I was harassed once by a homeless man because I refused to give him money. I never was one for giving money to beggars, and he just cemented that belief. I recall reading that a good number of homeless are made homeless through their own actions. Violence, drug addiction, etc. Of course not all are like that, but it's better to be safe.

I don't give them money. If I'm someplace near a food establishment, I will ask them if they want a cup of coffee or perhaps a sandwich. You'd be surprised how many have told me "no thanks." :s

Not saying all homeless people are like that, but a good number of them are and a good number of them simply don't want food or drinks. They want cold hard cash for other reasons they're not willing to advertise because they know we wouldn't give them money if their cardboard signs read: "Help! Need cash for meth addiction and alcoholism."

I question them to the fullest and act upon my own instinct, I rather buy them food than give them money...
