Do you think there should be more help for beggars, homeless and poor people in your town/city?

I think they should be, they should be some where they can all go for food and drink and sleep.

It will get them of the street and you never know, they might then get a job if they got people to help.

A lot of homeless people are mentally ill. There should be help for them.

Yes. First deal with the poverty in your own country before tackling that of another country.

I think that in many cases homelessness (I think that's right) is just people being lazy, but in lots of cases it isn't. some people can't help but end up there. these people need somewhere to go that will help then get a résumé and everything figured out, food, shelter, a place to sleep and bathe... that's a lot of the problem: nobody wants to hire a guy that smells like garbage. if these people had a place that would help them like that, it would help a lot. but there will always be a problem with homelessness because there is welfare and the government gives this money away. there will always be people, in my opinion, who are too lazy to get up off their asses (pardon me) and find a real job. panhandling is not a job!

The major reasons and lack of causes for homelessness as documented by many reports and studies include:

Substance abuse

Disability

Mental disorder, where mental health services are unavailable or difficult to access.

Inavailability of employment opportunities.

Poverty, caused by many factors including unemployment and underemployment.

Lack of affordable healthcare.

War or armed conflict.

Lack of affordable housing.

Domestic violence.

Prison release and re-entry into society.

Natural disaster, including but not limited to earthquakes and hurricanes. An example is the 1999 Athens earthquake in Greece in which many middle class people became homeless and are still without a home as of 2009, with some of them living in containers, especially in the Nea Ionia earthquake survivors container city provided by the government, and in most cases their only property that survived the quake was their car. Such people are known in Greece as seismopathis meaning earthquake-struck.

Forced eviction - In many countries, people lose their homes by government order to make way for newer upscale high rise buildings, roadways, and other governmental needs. The compensation may be minimal, in which case the former occupants cannot find appropriate new housing and become homeless.

Mortgage foreclosures where mortgage holders see the best solution to a loan default is to take and sell the house to pay off the debt. The popular press made an issue of this in 2008; the real magnitude of the problem is undocumented.

Property taxes. Even after the house is paid for, the owner must continue to pay the property taxes for as long as he/she resides on the property.

Funny thing is I didn't see lazy on this study list. This could happen to any one of us and it's scary. A quote comes to mind: “Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes.”

Did you expect it?

What's funnier is that homeless-by-choice isn't on there... guess it's not that common.

huh?[/quote]What don't you understand about my post?

Homless people are people too, and they need help! So yes there should be more support for them.

but there should be a crackdown on people who are just going to take advantage of welfare money. my sister quit her job just before Christmas (that's what she said), and it is now February 25. she hasn't even looked for a job and she is just lazy. she's gonna go apply for welfare. we need to prevent things like that from happening. there's a difference between being unable to find a job and being to lazy to look for one.

^ Thats not homelessness though, That is getting benefits. Completely different

I saw my fair share of beggars these last few days... Is there a lack of work for these people?

Honestly, I do. As far as BreakGuy is concerned, I agree with you if you're referring to the U.S. Our church has mission trips over in 3rd world countries, but yet outside the church you have homeless people a few blocks up the street or maybe a family in need. Homeless people and beggars need help, and I believe in America, you should be given the opportunity to get back on your feet and make something of yourself if you're that unfortunate.

There is a homeless mission in my town. It provides them with a place to sleep and a meal (I think they only serve soup once a day though). That part of town is packed with homeless people. My cousin used to volunteer there. He liked it up until one of the homeless people went through his jacket and took the money in the pocket. He said that he had established a bond with this person and they would have conversations all the time.. For him to rob him like that made him feel like helping them wasn't really worth it anymore, so he quit doing it.

Yeah they need help. They're really nice people. All they need are second chances. But there are some who are just really aggressive to the people around them :/
