My mom is getting older and I feel that so that I have a place to live, I'd like to have residence live at.

I go to a program where I have a counselor, and I see a psychiatrist 2x/month and a therapist 1x/week.

I know the therapist and the counselor from program can help.

One problem I know is mom would not approve of me going into a community residence / group home, but I feel it's important to me not only to have a residence, but to help foster my independence.

What can I do? Where do I begin?

Are you on disability? Who pays for your health insurance? Do you have your own source of income?

I'd assume stuff like that is not free.

I'm on disability. I get medicaid, medicare and hip (through medicare part D). The only income I get is SSI/SSDI.

Is it enough to live on?

How long do you plan on living in a group home? For the rest of your life?

This is probably not the best resource to get information from. The medical professionals you are interfacing with can and should be able to refer you to services of that nature. You should discuss with them your concerns of this nature so they can help you in that regard.

As for what your mother thinks - I presume you're an adult, so you are making an adult consideration and decision; communication is key, you should communicate your intentions and the causations and motivations for your intentions.

[As for income, etc. - another consideration is those Medicaid facilities tend to suck, so you should consider where you'll end up, and if that's really something that is going to empower you and be a positive development for your needs. Once you're in a supported environment like that, I believe you lose a considerable portion of disability income, too.]

I know the therapist and the counselor from program can help.

There is the answer to your question. The experts should be able to find the appropriate community residence/group home to match your needs. I don't believe (I might be wrong) that you can do this on your own without a referral from either the therapist or counselor. If you feel your Mom wouldn't approve, perhaps she could be present when you discuss this with your therapist or counselor.

Good luck with this Andy and please keep us updated.
