Have you ever seen someone post publicly telling the forum community that they are leaving?

Did they actually leave? Was it over forum drama or personal issues?

Do you think people who publicly announce they are leaving a forum are just looking for attention and want to watch all the reactions that follow?

Actually the two yess' answered it both Yes. Yes I have

I was one of two administrators of a community with around 30,000 posts not too long ago, and I had quite a bit of firsthand experience dealing with that sort of situation (despite the forum's small size). I've found it's generally an act of retaliation or at least in part has something to do with drama on the forums. I've never paid attention to that sort of thing for that reason, and if users on the forum entertain it and create additional drama related to it, I'll delete the posts and send out warnings if necessary to save the peace in the community.

Of course "I'm losing my internet for 30 days, will be back" is fine, but "I hate the administration here, they never stop drama, I'm leaving for X days" is completely different. I've never felt obligated to entertain that sort of drama as an administrator.

I've seen it a few times. Its a drama ploy to get people to beg them to stay & get themselves in the limelight. They, invariably stay or return after a short-time

I admin a political forum. I've seen quite a few people rage quit. Usually it is for attention reasons. On a debate forum it can also be contributed to "thin skin" though.

I thought this was a post saying you were going to leave. :P

I have.
Or well, I never got the chance, but I knew they'd left, and spoke to them about it. The person felt the site was a bit poorly run, and felt like she had no place there. She thanked the site, although expressed disappointment with a few unnamed people.
The site admin deleted the post and banned her, without acknowledging it.

Said person left the site for adequate reasons. Personally though, if I leave a site, I won't make a topic. I'll just leave.

Yes, a few. But they always end up staying. I think some members do it to get some attention although I also think there are other reasons that can cause that sort of behavior. Also if someone does leave, you hardly hear it being talked about much. Most people just go inactive if they leave or find a better forum.

Funny story about one forum. I got sick of the admin being useless etc (This was about 2-3 years ago) and I ended up just posting in a new topic I am leaving and the reason why.

The admin then upgraded the forum to a paid software, got better staff, and ended up being active and useful for the forum. Then the forum closed a week later.

We had two members constantly saying we are leaving then they stuck around and eventually say they are staying after all
After this happened at least 3 or 4 times I said fine just go FFS, I think it's a power play thing with some people they like the drama and the power of people begging them to stay, stroking their egos makes them feel good.

Indeed. Those are the ones who pop back up saying "I'm back! I missed everyone" once the drama of their departure has died off and people have moved on with their lives.

This is the way conservatives generally left my old forums.
They wanted people to start saying 'We'll stop using facts and go easy on you.' basically, it seemed.

Yes.

Did they actually leave? Was it over forum drama or personal issues?

Both, actually. In both cases most of them came back after awhile, or just occasionally stop by to either say something like "oh hello, yes, I'm still alive" (those who left due to personal issues) or to see how's the forum doing without them (those who left due to drama), since apparently they think the forum life revolved around them and should have died when they left.

Do you think people who publicly announce they are leaving a forum are just looking for attention and want to watch all the reactions that follow?

There are some who do that. Personally, when I decide to leave a forum, I just leave without any prior notice to anyone, unless I'm a staff member, in which case I tender my resignation to the forum administration, so they can remove me from the staff group and look for a replacement.

And when I leave, I'm gone for good. I certainly don't log in every now and then just to see if anyone still remembers me, like I've noticed some people do.

*deadpans* Yeah, I've done that once... ...ended up eventually getting banned, but oh, well.

I've seen people come and go on other communities and most of them are just staff members hanging up the cape. I must say, many of them seem genuine and actually have real life problems or careers that may take up too much time so I can't say that I've seen many do it just for the attention.

Yes, namely myself. I tell everyone I'm going and why then I delete.
