Facebook and Twitter criticised for failing to take down ‘Islamophobic posts’

Facebook and Twitter have failed to take down hundreds of inflammatory Islamophobic postings despite being alerted by anti-racism groups, an investigation has revealed.

The Independent said the number of postings, some of which accuse Muslims of being rapists, paedophiles and comparable to cancer, have increased significantly in recent months in the aftermath of the Rotherham sex abuse scandal and the murder of British hostages held by the Islamic State group (IS).

In most cases those behind the abuse have not had their accounts suspended or the posts removed, according to the newspaper, despite Muslim groups bringing the abuse to the social media sites’ attention.

Fiyaz Mughal, director of interfaith organisation Faith Matters, said: ‘It is morally unacceptable that social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, which are vast profit-making companies, socially engineer what is right and wrong to say in our society when they leave up inflammatory, highly socially divisive and openly bigoted views.’

A Facebook spokeswoman defended the company but admitted due to the large amount of people who used the site there would occasionally be content that was offensive.

‘We take hate speech seriously and remove any content reported to us that directly attacks others based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition,’ she added.

‘With a diverse global community of more than a billion people, we occasionally see people post content which, whilst not against our rules, some people may find offensive.

If it's not against the rules, do you think these posts should be taken down? Why/Why not?

People are always spouting off at the mouth about everything. The people of islam are not immune to this.

If the posts are breaking any rules, then this is nothing but people exercising their right to freedom of speech.

It is the WORLD wide web.

"The Freedom of Speech" as used to be defined in the United States, is not guaranteed in many other countries.

In Thailand, article 112 of the criminal code provides a minimum mandatory sentence of three years in prison and a maximum sentence of 15 years for those found guilty of defaming or insulting the King and members of the royal family. The king of Thailand is the country’s most revered public figure and is the world’s longest reigning monarch. The law, enacted in 1908, is often invoked to censor web content and shut down websites. Even ordinary citizens have been jailed for allegedly sending mobile phone text messages that insult the royal family or even monarchs of the past. Since the army took power last May, the new government has filed more than a dozen lèse majesté cases.

Racism is racism and should be removed. I will not tolerate any of that. If i see that on my news feed it gets reported and the person/page removed/blocked.

no, because it's not breaking the rules...

people that cry and complain about every little thing shouldn't use the internet then...

Which is your right and you do not have to surround yourself with people who could possibly conjure up such hateful things to say.

Exactly.
I'm with Raven on this one too.

race and religious people are two different things...

islam people aren't a race...

the jews aren't a race...

just like christians aren't a race...

munks aren't a race...

you are talking about religious groups not races...

races are genetic related, not what your religion is...

True however the only exception to that may be Jewish where you pretty much need to be born Jewish to be a Jew.
They would be only only religion which could be most closely subscribed as a race.

To say that someone has a 'phobia' means that they are afraid of something. So to call someone an Islamophobic would suggest they someone is afraid of Islam.
I am not 'Islamophobic' because I am not afraid of them no matter how many innocent people that they kill.

I had to block someone yesterday on facebook after they wen on and on and on about islam, trying to make me say that I was comparing them to Nazis. Twisted my words completely and then called me a liar and a backstabber. Then started swearing at my cousin. Gave him warnings to stop and take his debate/insults somewhere else but he continued. So blocked him.
