A New Orleans city prosecutor has resigned after a marijuana joint reportedly fell out of his pocket in court - while he was talking to a police officer.

Assistant city attorney Jason Cantrell was chatting with an officer in Orleans Parish Magistrate's Court when it happened, according to the local Times-Picayune.

The newspaper quoted sources as saying a pair of cops glanced at the joint on the ground, then at each other before making arguably the easiest collar in the annals of police work.

Cantrell, 43, who immediately resigned from his post, was reportedly cautioned and released under a city policy for minor marijuana offences.

His wife LaToya Cantrell, who is currently running for New Orleans City Council, said: I absolutely do not condone his actions.

I love my husband unconditionally and am very concerned for his health and well-being, and for that of our family. I hope that this incident will encourage Jason to seek the professional help.

Must admit the wife's comment made me giggle. For crap sake, it's not like it was a crack pipe!

If this were you or me, we surely wouldn't have been:
