I'm currently in a contract with ATT, but I'd like to transfer over to a non-contract phone.

Is there a way I can convert over from the ATT (plan) phone over to a new (non-contract / pay as you go) phone and keep my current number (port it over)?

Thanks,

Andy...

In this scenario, likely not, but you'd be best off asking AT&T Customer Support whether it is a possibility. If you were going from contract to another contract, you can often 'purchase' the number, but a non-contracted [pre-pay] phone sometimes uses different protocols than the regular ones, and thus don't get the same number code reservations that the contracted phones do.

Ive had the same number for years. Ive taken it to different carriers, most charge a fee to have your number transferred but its worth it. Its a real hassle making everyone you know learn your new number.

Do they offer

http://www.mycricket.com/cell-phone-plans

or

http://www.metropcs.com/plans

in your area? Those are the best to go with as its a flat fee per month, your bill will never go up or down and there is never any overages to pay as its all unlimited.

I have a MetroPCS in my area. But how can I go about switching without having to pay the hefty termination fees from AT&T? (let me guess, that's not possible)

If you dont care about your credit you could just not pay the bill they send you.

How much time is left on your contract? Does AT&T offer a non-plan option?

It ends in September of this year. I would be willing to convert over to Metro PCS which does over porting my number as long as I keep my ATT phone working.

Switching over to Metro PCS would save me $15 per month round abouts so I'm going to see in the next couple of months if I can go this route.
