Lesbian teen sues to force school to hold prom

Good on her, hope she wins

They should of suspended the girl rather than canceled the prom. If the policy says no same-sex prom dates, then no same-sex prom dates. The school didn't violate anyone's rights, because she never had the right to bring her same-sex prom date to the dance if the policy was already established before she chose to go to that school.

Kids choose which school they go to now? We never did when I was a kid.

Sure. You have free, public schools, and expensive, private schools.

The real question is why are there no same sex prom dates? This is supposed to be the land of the free, a country that promotes freedom and liberty for all, along with the pursuit of happiness. I don't think this really holds up those values very well.

I think people need to get over themselves. Homosexuality is now a common part of society and EVERYONE needs to accept it.

You wouldn't discriminate against someone because of their color, don't do it because of who they are attracted to.

I didn't even go to prom.

Seems like its just someone who wants to make a big deal out of nothing. If she dont like how prom is run, then dont go... Most people (like me) think its lame anyways.

I went to prom and wished that I didn't have to. But we didn't have to take anyone.

If she's really that bothered about the school's policy, then she could make her own prom...

At least one supporter has offered to help McMillen and her classmates hold an alternate prom.

New Orleans hotel owner Sean Cummings told The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson he was so disappointed with the school board's decision he offered to transport the students in buses to the city and host a free prom at one of his properties.

Still doesn't make it the child's choice. It'd be the parents', no?

I hope she wins. People need to get over themselves. The civil war was started because we failed to live up to our creed, do we ever learn?

We hold these truths to be self-evident that ALL men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights and among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Yeah I have heard about this already, it's also been on tv talk shows three times. It's good for her that she stood up for what she believes in, the system is an a hole and they should burn. And the kids are just jerks for saying such mean things to her.

The girl is actually getting an award for standing up for the lgbt community and whatnot and wanda sykes is going to present it! or something like that, wanda is in it somewhere.

Maybe because she looks like a Jack o' Lantern.

$35,000 could of went towards books and supplies for students and teachers. She is an ignorant, foolish, selfish, ungrateful, rude, obnoxious, and greedy individual. Around here, good teachers are losing their jobs because of funds being cut short by the state, so that 35k could of been used to keep one of our teachers. Just this year, we lost a teacher who just got married and is expecting a baby soon. It's a shame.

-.- Was it not the ACLU that sued the school?
