How do you feel about forums listing their banned members? How about them changing their avatar to "Banned" or something like that? Should banned members be put on display or should it be private?

I say make it known to everyone else so I don't quote their posts and try to talk to them. If they are banned they are never going to answer me! Lol

I think it should be public, that way members can see what not to do on the forum so they won't end up in the same group. There's one forum I visit that will prevent you from viewing a banned member's account, but I don't think forums should do that IMO.

That’s a good point. Just a strike through their name is all you need though. I've seen other forums change their avatar, title, etc and have a list of them in an annoucement. Seems like overkill .

I’ve had to ban a few members on my forum. For me, if they are banned, they are also deleted out of the member database. If they were spammers, I will let other forum owners know so they can watch out for them. However, if they were just a disgruntled member that had a bad attitude, I keep that information private.

Do you only do permanent bans? In the past I’ve banned people temporarily to give them a chance to cool off and stop breaking the rules.

I would do temporary bans to allow for the member to cool off. Those I have permanently banned had issues on other forums as well with their attitude. So it wasn't just a "bad day" for them. I'm always for giving people chances & honestly would prefer to not ban at all & let us talk it through.

If I ban I prefer to make a user group with a little banner that says banned and leave it at that… 20 years ago? I would have made an announcement and put them on blast. No any more

String them up! Throw them in the stockades! Shame them publicly for all to see, point & laugh! Make an example of them! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... ahem. :p

I ban those who gets out of line with me, including the time I banned and fired one member for spewing racism on my forum a year ago. I e-mailed that person from the get go that he's hereby banned from future postings, because I don't tolerate that stuff at all.

I have yet to have to ban a member on my current forum, but I'd imagine I do what most administrators do and just move them into a banned user group with their username a different color or a strike-through their name. Now, if I had one of those users that continuously registered with new emails/proxies, I'd probably make my members aware of who they are and watch out for them.

Its crazy that racists still exist nowadays.

Thats good that you haven't had to ban anyone. We haven't had to either since reopening.

I'm on other sites that actually do this. Not only that, they list what atrocity said banned member has done. Two sites have a section devoted to bans while the other you can tell a person has been banned because their username is blacked out.

What's your view on this?

Personally I feel like it makes a forum look bad if lots of members are banned. I prefer to use mod queue and restrict privileges, and yeah temporary bans IF NEEDED like @Nebulous mentioned

On my group I've never done this but I'm actually fine with it. I don't think the forum having a lot of banned members means it's bad, it just has a lot of problematic users.

No it doesn't but personally, if I saw that, it'd mean that EITHER the management are power hungry and ban everyone who disagree with them, or the forum somehow manages to attract lots of toxic ppl and trolls, etc. Neither of which are a good lock, and both of which would put me off joining

I don't know about you but I kind of have to give props to administrators that try to keep the community safe for those who actually want to use it. Toxic people and trolls are everywhere. It's good that site owners are not willing to deal with people being creepy and making others feel unsafe. I respect that more than joining a place that tolerates disruptive behavior.

I think it should be known and I think staff should mark their account as banned so others can see it as to not quote or message them.
