A 22-year-old woman who got out of a car on a motorway after arguing with the driver was later knocked down and killed, police have said.

The woman, who has not been named, was walking along the southbound M80, near Denny in Falkirk, in the early hours of the morning when she was hit.

Central Scotland Police said she was being driven home after going for a few drinks after work.

She refused to get back into the car after the argument, police said.

The driver lost sight of her and drove further along the motorway to check for his passenger. When he returned to the area where he last saw her, the emergency services were already there.

A Central Scotland Police spokeswoman said: The woman had been for a few drinks after work and was being driven home.

However, the car had stopped on the M80 close to where the M876 merges as she was feeling unwell. She refused to get back into the car following an argument.

Police appealed to anyone who was driving along the M80 between 0030 BST and 0115 BST - or who saw a silver Vauxhall Astra stopped on the motorway - to get in touch.
