WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) – Three students were arrested and several others are facing suspensions after marijuana edibles were found at a middle school in Adams County.

A full investigation is underway at Shaw Heights Middle School, near Westminster, after several students ate marijuana candies and later appeared high in class.

A total of 15 students were involved, according to officials. Four students are facing expulsions from the Adams 50/Westminster School District and 11 others are facing suspensions.

It started when teachers noticed a few students acting strangely during class.

“At least one of the kids had brought these products to the school and began sharing them with friends,” said district spokesman Steve Saunders.

Schools all across America in all 50 states deal with the same exact problems (students with drugs or alcohol) every single day of the school year and have been dealing with these problems for years. How is this something new? Just seems like another opportunity to beat up on Colorado for their new "controversial" marijuana law.

I don't care if people want to smoke pot or take drugs. If you want to smoke or eat that crap until you go in a coma have at it. But the reason this is a story is now kids can potentially get a hold of these drugs a lot easier then other states it's not legal.

My problem in making it legal they have weak laws. I want tough laws like heavy jail times whoever gave these kids the drugs. Life time jail sentences for driving under the influence if you hurt someone and guaranteed you never see a drivers license again if caught driving under the influence. Must have means of paying for overdose or drug related health issues with cash or no service so my health care prices don't go up.

What is new is that now pot is a status offense. The product is legal for everybody else, but not kids.

The kid did nothing more wrong than if they took a fifth of gin and a pack a cigarettes and an Off Track Betting slip to class.

It has become more difficult to enforce and has created unforeseen problems like the above.

What's funny is that those 2 things are more damaging to a person's health and people would rather see kids get caught with those things (because society is more accepting of them).

The long term effects of marijuana use, in any form, such as various cancers and psychological effects have not been fully studied for a significant period of time.

And, now, as it is NOT politically correct to suggest that there is any harm At All from its use, said effects will not be studied in depth in this country.

Yes, fear what you don't understand, in the mean time, doctors will continue prescribing marijuana to their patients and recreational users (some of which have been using marijuana consistently since the 1960's) will continue to be alright.

I would disagree with that from the studies I have read. But again regardless I dont care if dummies want to smoke it and im not talking the people with TRUE medical needs. Just make much tougher laws for substances that can effect you on the roads.

DENVER -- The easy availability of marijuana in Colorado is raising concerns among police, parents and teachers who worry that kids are getting sick from eating pot-infused "edibles."

Manufacturers are adding marijuana to everything from cookies to chocolate bars, sodas and candies, and strength and serving size vary widely. Colorado on Jan. 1 permitted special stores to sell marijuana to adults but retained a legal ban on possession of pot by minors.

That hasn't stopped them from getting hold of it: Twelve students were suspended last month after they ate marijuana-infused candies at their suburban Denver middle school. The two students who supplied the candies are being expelled.

"A couple of our teachers noticed some kids who weren't acting right," says Steve Saunders, a spokesman for Shaw Heights Middle School in Westminster, Colo. "You never know when they're walking down the hall what they're eating. It's a lot harder to tell when they're eating edibles instead of out smoking a joint in the parking lot."
