Marijuana Discussion

The pilot of a hot air balloon that crashed in New Zealand, killing 11, is likely to have smoked cannabis shortly before the flight, investigators say.

Pilot Lance Hopping showed poor judgement which contributed to the 2012 crash, an official report said.

The crash near the town of Carterton, Wairarapa, occurred after the balloon became entangled in power lines and burst into flames.

It was New Zealand's worst air disaster in decades. No one on board survived.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission said post-mortem tests had found an active ingredient of cannabis in Mr Hopping's blood, which indicated that he was a long-term user of cannabis.

Based on eyewitness testimony and the tests, "it was [also] highly likely that the pilot smoked cannabis on the morning of the flight," the report said.

"Poor judgement and poor decision-making were factors contributing to this accident," the commission said.

Why are you still posting on here with stuff? I don't really care.. Even if that is true and that's bad, look at how many times this happens..really and then the stuff that happen when people drink to much alcohol.

Excellent point.

"Being high" on something and then doing anything that requires sound judgement and your full attention is a bad idea.

So then, why do it?

Because its different for everyone, yeah for some people it may cause them to panic or whatever do stupid things, but for a lot of people it can help them calm down or for myself it helps with my anxiety and helps me relax and fall asleep if needed, which is good because I've had sleeping problems my whole life. (not that i need it to fall asleep, I've got drugs for that but if I needed too I could use that to help me sleep)

I've tried it and didn't really see what the big deal was. I understand it can help with pain control and that's always a good thing. My concern is those pot heads that get so buzzed that they're eyes look like two piss holes in the snow and decide to drive. Those people should be dealt with the same way as drunks are dealt with. Being impaired means from any cause and that includes pot.

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Longmont are trying to figure out how a toddler got her hands on marijuana that made her sick.

Two year old Evelyn tested positive for pot and ended up in the hospital but her mother doesn’t know how the child came into contact with the now-legal drug.

Evelyn’s mother, Aida Hernandez, believes the child ate part of a cookie she found on the ground in the grass outside of their apartment.

“It was brown, like a chocolate chip cookie,” said Hernandez.

I try it few times long time ago and like it. I have nothing against those who use Marijuana. I think that most of the stuff is for people only need to use it with caution. Complete banning does not give anything. Example of prohibition in the United States in the 20s

And now we have:

SEATTLE (CBS Seattle) – According to a recent study, fatal car crashes involving pot use have tripled in the U.S.

“Currently, one of nine drivers involved in fatal crashes would test positive for marijuana,” Dr. Guohua Li, director of the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention at Columbia, and co-author of the study told HealthDay News.

Researchers from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health gathered data from six states – California, Hawaii, Illinois, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and West Virginia – that perform toxicology tests on drivers involved in fatal car accidents. This data included over 23,500 drivers that died within one hour of a crash between 1999 and 2010.

Li reported in the study that alcohol contributed to about 40 percent of traffic fatalities throughout the decade.

The researchers found that drugs played an increasing role in fatal traffic accidents. Drugged driving accounted for more than 28 percent of traffic deaths in 2010, which is 16 percent more than it was in 1999.

The researchers also found that marijuana was the main drug involved in the increase. It contributed to 12 percent of fatal crashes, compared to only 4 percent in 1999.

“If a driver is under the influence of alcohol, their risk of a fatal crash is 13 times higher than the risk of the driver who is not under the influence of alcohol,” Li said. “But if the driver is under the influence of both alcohol and marijuana, their risk increased to 24 times that of a sober person.”

I wonder if that technically means that the argument "weed never killed anyone" is rendered useless?

Never did any kind of drugs except prescription. Never the bit curious in all my years. I guess I enjoyed life more then the need to alter it. Im what the left like to call one of those radical right wing, tea party extremists. And im proud to have that title. That said conservatives are hypocrites on this subject.

If you want to have drugs I say get a dump truck full of them and dump them right in your front yard if thats what you want. Take them until you die in a smoke of bliss for all I care. BUT the laws should protect the non users in society. Meaning if you are on drugs while driving, giving them to kids or anything that could potentially hurt another person like say on the job. You go to jail and never see freedom again. If people want that kind of freedom thats fine but the punishment needs to be very high (no pun intended) for those kinds of freedoms.

I've smoked weed over the last few years, although the last two times have caused me to feel really panicky. Originally, I smoked it and never really suffered from it. Last year, I smoked and had a panic attack that put me off it until last night, where I decided to smoke again. I left the party early because I started to feel off again, and very panicked again. Wasn't fun.

It common for some people to get panic attacks, not everyone can handle it. But usually this happens to people when they first start smoking weed because they aren't use to the effects and panic too much, when really nothing that bad can happen. You can get an extremely dry mouth which I've got many times. I still do get a dry mouth just from smoking, its what happens when i smoke. But you need to let yourself know that nothing will happen when you are on marrijuana, you will not die from it, and that is people's thoughts when they first smoke they are like my mouth is so dry or I'm too high i'm going to die, which isn't the case your just overthinking things which makes it worse and if you cannot handle the effects you shouldn't smoke it. because some people just can't smoke it without getting panic attacks.

"...nothing that bad can happen..."

Unless you drive, try to cook a meal, have to tend to children.... ... ...

Just like with booze.

Eventually the "facts of life" that apply to booze and to tobacco will apply to marijuana as well.

It is not good for your lungs to smoke anything over the long term, it is not a good idea to drive while "on" anything, and if you are under age and caught with it, you're busted.

I hope Michigan joins with Colorado and legalizes it across the boards. People are going to plant, grow and smoke pot, regardless of the law. So decriminalize it for the entire country and treat it like booze; put an age limit on it and tax it. We'll be rid of the national deficit in about 3 years, if it takes that long. Of all the illegal drugs out there, pot is the least harmful and does the most good. I have access to incredibly powerful prescription pain killers and not one of those alleviates my pain anywhere nearly as well as pot does.

You could apply this excuse to any vice anyone has over an illegal substance. "People are going to shoot up heroin anyway, regardless of the law, so let's just legalize it." Or, "People are going to take meth regardless, so let's decriminalize it." But I don't think this is as solid a reasoning as many people think it is.

While I understand and agree that it's one of the least harmful drugs, I still wouldn't ever do it. I am not the kind of person who likes to have their mind altered by a substance. Believe me, I was on pills for sleep issues and anxiety for quite some time. After years and years of being a test rat to try and figure out which one worked the best--none of them did, though--I decided to kick them all and just deal with my issues with a clear head.

However, pills are different than marijuana, and although I've never done it personally, literally all my friends and family still smoke it or, if they don't, have tried it in the past. Many of my friends were and still are burn-outs. I don't know if that's because of how much they smoked or a mix of things such as a previously existing inability to want to care or do anything with their lives. I'm not saying you can't be successful and smoke marijuana at the same time, but for the most part it tends to lead to less than ideal side effects in terms of the impact on your life.

I don't see why we can't legalize it, sell it, tax it and treat it as alcohol, though. If you're under 21 and you're caught with it, you get a minor in possession charge just like you would with alcohol, or if you're driving impaired, you get charged with DUI. I think we should also conduct more research on how to utilize marijuana's medical benefits by removing the chemicals that make you high and isolating the ones (in whatever capacity is necessary) to help treat pain and seizures and the like.

This is why you can use vaporizers (Recommended if you want to keep your lungs very heathy). Or bongs (which contains water and makes your hits smoother and better on your lungs, not as good as vaporizer though.) You can also use Marijuana in foods which will not hurt your lungs.

Berkeley Requires Marijuana Dispensaries To Provide Free Weed For Low-Income Patients
3 July

BERKELEY (CBS SF) — The city of Berkeley will require medical marijuana dispensaries to give away two percent of the amount of cannabis they sell each year free to low-income patients.

The City Council voted unanimously at Tuesday’s meeting to amend the city’s medical pot rules, which would also allow for a fourth dispensary in Berkeley.

Considerably. It's just odd for me because I expected to experience this more so when I first started smoking it. Nothing quite as bad as that came up until last year when I smoked it, and just basically freaked out. This was after a few years of smoking it, and not suffering any issues. Last year, I was drinking at the same time then though, and that's a big no-no, and was highly stupid of me.. I think last time, I began to panic because of that mess from the previous time that it had happened, and thought it would happen again - so while I never had a direct panic attack, I certainly did start to worry. Last few nights, I've been passing on it - certainly not worth the hassle right now.
