I have a serious question, and would appreciate serious answers.

IF this happens, and the North does take military action against the US and its allies, what do you think Mr. Obama's response would be?

(Reuters) - North Korea on Sunday warned the top U.S. military commander stationed in South Korea that his forces would meet a miserable destruction if they go ahead with scheduled military drills with South Korean troops, North Korean state media said.

Pak Rim-su, chief delegate of the North Korean military mission to the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom, gave the message by phone to Gen. James Thurman, the commander of the U.S. Forces Korea, KCNA news agency said.

I guess he'd start with diplomacy (what Smooth said

) and more trade embargoes, but I doubt North Korea would give in straight away. So uhm, after that I guess he might declare war. He doesn't have to worry about being re-elected anyway. There'd be bit of a diplomatic scuffle with China, but they want their trade. NATO would undoubtedly be involved, as well as UN peacekeeping forces.

From there on, there'd probably be a decent size fleet positioned near Korea (probably in Japan). They'll probably start carpet bombing the place, support troops and medical personnel would be sent to South Korea. In no event would A-bombs be dropped on North Korea.

Evil, you don't think Mr. Obama would retaliate in kind of the North used a weak, badly designed, and barely functioning nuclear weapon to destroy some farmhouses and a watch band factory outside Goesan (when they were aiming at Seoul)?
I sincerely doubt he would. Maybe as a last resort, but probably not at all.

Perhaps if a functional weapon actually struck the Southern Capitol or a major US Base?

Or, if the North launched toward, and hit, Japan.

At this point, I believe the only way they could get something to the US mainland would to be ship it air freight via KAL.

Maybe a small one. Maybe.

I wonder if they could even hit Japan.

@Doc: What do you think he would do?

That did indeed come to mind, Shiro

I would rather not find out, and I don't think the Japanese do either.
No, probably not.

But I don't think it would be a massive, overwhelming military response with the end result being the reunification of Korea under the government of the South.
China would probably object to that, yeah.
