A day of anger over a fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teen in suburban St. Louis turned to mayhem as people looted businesses, vandalized vehicles and confronted police in riot gear who tried to block access to parts of the city.

Additionally, Laura Hettiger, a reporter for CBS affiliate KMOV-TV, tweeted that the police chief in Ferguson claims he and the St. Louis County Police chief were shot at overnight in a Walmart parking lot.

Police told CBS affiliate KMOV-TV in St. Louis that close to 300 officers responded to the area and two officers suffered injuries throughout the night. St. Louis County Police said at least 19 different departments responded to Ferguson, arresting at least 32 people. According to police, shots were fired at a police helicopter in the area.

The tensions erupted after a candlelight vigil Sunday night for 18-year-old Michael Brown, who police said was shot multiple times Saturday after a scuffle involving the officer, Brown and another person in Ferguson, a predominantly black suburb of the city.

KMOV-TV reports at least 12 businesses near the shooting scene were looted, including a convenience store, a check-cashing store, a boutique and a small grocery store. People took items from a sporting goods store and a cell phone retailer, and carted rims away from a tire store.

TV footage showed streams of people walking from a liquor store carrying bottles of alcohol, and in some cases protesters stood atop police cars or taunted officers who stood stoic, some carrying shields and batons.

County Police Chief Jon Belmar said the shooting occurred after an officer encountered Brown and another man outside an apartment complex in Ferguson.

Belmar said one of the men pushed the officer into his squad car and a struggle began. Belmar said at least one shot was fired from the officer's gun inside the police car. Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson said authorities were still sorting out what happened inside the police car. It was not clear if Brown was the man who struggled with the officer.

The struggle spilled out into the street, where Brown was shot multiple times. Belmar said the exact number of shots wasn't known and that all shell casings at the scene matched the officer's gun. Police were investigating why the officer shot Brown, who police have confirmed was unarmed.

People wonder why there's racial profiling to begin with. I'm sorry but certain communities perpetuate stereotypes. Their answer to a shooting of someone by the police? Riot, loot and pillage. THIS is why people are profiled.

Your thoughts?

I'm still wondering how protesting a possible improper use of force by a police officer turned into breaking into a liquor store and stealing from an otherwise innocent small business.

And all of these innocent business owners as well:

Would serve them right if every business owner packed up and left.

of course looting and hurting the community is unacceptable, but the police is getting out of hand and the public is getting sick of it. now, of course you all are going to focus on the people that looted and did the damage and forget about the police killing a teen. good job.

If found guilty of the improper use of force, or even homicide, the cop should face the same prison sentence as anybody else.

Only a total asshole would say otherwise.

But I am still a little foggy about what wanton violence, arson, looting, and all the rest have to do with protesting police misconduct. To my limited mind, that would seem just to make the entire situation worse.

Two wrongs might make good TV, but.....

What about job profiling? What about profiling that occurs when no such crime has been committed? Or is it your assumption that profiling is only relegated to these types of incidents?

There is extensive research done into the psychology rioting to suggest that the riots aren't ancillary to racial profiling. Rather, the social conditions were already there beneath the surface. To add, it isn't something singular to any one community. Rioting can happen in any community if the conditions are right, so I don't see how this justifies profiling any specific group of people. : /

Although race is visibly intertwined, rioting is more symbolic of a class struggle. It is the perceived final refuge of the abused and suppressed. To add to that, social dynamics that come into play. http://m.bbc.com/news/magazine-14463452

This is no surprise. It's how the black community deals with things like this. Violence and robbery are ingrained into them from birth.

Of course rioting and looting is how I vent my frustrations. / sarcasm

The stereotypical profile of a serial killer is a white male; does that mean that white males are born serial killers? School shootings are most often perpetrated in small communities by suburban white kids, is that something they are ingrained with?

Yes. Because the potential use of unlawful force (Remember the jury's still out on that one) is sad, but in the end it's one ruined life. Compared to 12 businesses wrecked, and goodness knows how many employees who could wind up adding a statistic to those unemployment rates everyone's so freaked out about.

It sucks the kid died, but if the first reaction people have is "hey, lets destroy a street!" then honestly, I'd rather see them punished than the cop.

The reason why people are pissed is because the people that are being murdered by police are not getting justice... cops are rarely punished when all cops should be countable for their actions as well as the few that are looting and doing damage...

I just seen on the news where they said the shooting of Michael Brown was not connected to the robbery they say he did at a nearby liquor store.
