Do you think these are necessary on a forum? Like a person cannot post unless their post contains at least 10 characters. Does it help avoid spam or is it just annoying?

Depends, I get it if you have a serious debate forum or something like that, but if you have a poll section like here on Off Topix it's ridiculous to have to say "I voted yes" instead of just "yes". If you wanna avoid spam, just have enough moderators around.

Who the heck is going to count to make sure their post contains at least 10 characters?

Not me! oops, that was only 6 characters....

Seriously what shouldn't be allowed is just using a smilie as a reply. If a person only posts a smilie as as reply, they should get a message that their post reply is empty and please try again!

What about in threads where we use: :nta:

:P

But yeah, Ive been on some forums that have a minimum character count of like 50 and there are many posts that people make that don't require 50 characters, but still add to the conversation.

I think it's completely unnecessary as not every quality response needs so many characters. If you ask a yes or no question then why do you feel entitled to anything more then a yes or no? Would a sentence conveying either yes or no be any better then simply writing "yes" or "no"?

Sometimes though a forum could do with a maximum character limit... Some people really don't know when they said enough even after five plus paragraphs and counting. XD

I think its alright if its set to like 5, but anything more than that is a little annoying.
