I live about 3 blocks away from a university in the city, and so there are plenty of college kids around me who either live in apartment buildings, condos, and old houses in the neighborhoods surrounding the school. Where I live, we're not on campus, so they're renting from landlords and property management, which means they're in the real world among people who have responsibilities outside of school.

Now, I've had trouble with the kiddos in the building next to our apartments. I live in a 20-some unit apartment building that is relatively quiet, which is nice, but the noise comes from around us more often than not. The landlord of the apartment building who is being rented out to college kids has had numerous complaints from people around me and from me myself as they tend to like to stand on their balconies, litter, shout even though they're standing a foot away from one another, and one of them even lit the brush on fire because he didn't think that lighting a piece of paper aflame and dropping it into the shrubs would do anything.

Fortunately, they haven't been an issue for a long time. However, there are some more college kids across the culdesac who just loooove to throw parties for their friends. They haven't been a huge problem lately, but in the past they have strung set ups for bands so they can play well into the night. I work a random schedule, though, and that random schedule sometimes requires me to be at work at an early hour all throughout the week.

I have to work at 9 a.m. tomorrow, and the people across the street have strung up some cords into their house. There's a massively bright spotlight shining against the house and there are a good number of people coming in and out of it. They haven't been making much noise at all at this point, which is good and I hope it stays that way because I'd like to sleep in my bedroom tonight. But I'm afraid they're planning on having a little too much fun at the expense of others who have work in the morning.

What do YOU guys do when dealing with neighbors like this? Have you ever had any experiences with irritating and inconsiderate neighbors?

Practically every where I've lived I have had to deal with noisy neighbors. I tend to go over and talk to them myself, but if that doesn't work I wont hesitate to call the landlord. Unless I am unsure about the neighbors metal stability, then I'd probably avoid snitching so I don't have to deal with retaliation. I avoid large apartment complexes and I currently live in a duplex so if I called to complain about the noise, the neighbors can pretty much pinpoint that I was the one who called because chances are none of the other people on this street have our landlord's phone number. My current neighbors are very quiet and considerate and I hope they don't move out! ...at least while I'm still living here.

^ Heard my share of sex moans and whatnot through the walls of places I've lived too.

The odd thing is. There are families living here. the playground is under the humping couple's bedroom window. Hiw do you report something like this? "hi. a couple's humping is disturbing the peace" , :s

Yeah, sounds about right. :P

I've had a lot of interesting neighbors. The one most frightening was a young man who lived next to me who flipped his lid. He kept pulling the fire alarm in the building and then would retreat to his apartment. Then he started playing Misfits - One Last Caress over and over again, but just the first 20-30 seconds. He was throwing things against the walls and breaking the glass mirrors in his closet doors.

I feared for my safety, so I called the cops and a couple other people did, too. They came up to his door but couldn't get it open cause he had barricaded it with his couch. Since we were on the first floor, the cops broke out his living room window with their guns drawn and told him to climb out. They took him to get a psych eval. and alas he was gone as far as I know. I left after they raised the prices on us not too long after that and am now in the place where I've lived for about 4-5 years now.

I love it in this cozy little 2-story apartment building. There aren't too many residents here, which makes it more intimate and friendly. Some people have even been here for 20+ years, as old as I am! It's just that these damn college kids can be so inconsiderate to people around them.

Well the good thing about renting is, you can leave! ...after a 30 day notice.

But you shouldn't have to leave just because other people are being jerks.

I don't think I'll leave any time soon. I can always get the other people kicked out if they cause too much trouble, but they would have to be just as bad as the psycho neighbor I had for that to happen. xD

yeah that guy sounded insane, makes me feel like all my previous neighbors (that I thought were strange) were actually somewhat normal.

He had a few wires loose, let's just say that. Dunno what happened to him, but I hope he got help.

youe fellow neighbours must be sick of the noise etc too....you need to get together and make a plan

every time they start to make a disturbance you all need to phone the police.....can you imagine how the police are going to react when 7 or 8 or more people phone them up complaning......imagine when that happens everytime theres a disturbance...imagine if thats once or twice or more a week.................police are soon going to get pissed off with the noisy ones arnt they?

That's actually a good plan! :highfive:
Gang bang the cops with phone calls!

they are not going to be happpy repeatedly making visits to the same place, for the same reasons....will soon lay down the law :evilgrin:

It has gotten to the point that other neighbors printed out and put up a sign on our mailboxes for the landlord who runs the condos beside us. Someone put his name and phone number up, and I have definitely used it before so I know I'm not the only one who thinks the kids are a nuisance. Now, the only thing I can really do about the kids across the street is call the cops. Fortunately, there wasn't much noise last night. There were, however, people standing on the porch talking loudly, which I'm not surprised at since they apparently are deaf and can't hear one another despite standing right beside each other.
