(BBC News) American football star Damar Hamlin is in a critical condition after collapsing during a primetime US National Football League game.

The Buffalo Bills player, 24, fell to the ground after colliding with an opponent during the first quarter of a match against the Cincinnati Bengals.

He was given CPR and taken to a local hospital, and the NFL suspended the game. Players were seen in tears and huddled in a group prayer for Hamlin.

Jordon Rooney, Hamlin's representative, wrote on Twitter: "His vitals are back to normal and they have put him to sleep to put a breathing tube down his throat. They are currently running tests." Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field before being taken away in an ambulance, the NFL said.

Organisers reached the decision to officially suspend the game for the night about an hour after the incident. NFL games are rarely suspended because of injury.

The two teams are among the top Super Bowl contenders this year, with their head-to-head coming in the primetime Monday night slot in the penultimate week of the NFL's regular season. The league's players association wrote in a statement: "We have been in touch with Bills and Bengals players, and with the NFL. The only thing that matters at this moment is Damar's health and well being."

Hamlin, a native of McKees Rock, Pennsylvania, was a standout at the University of Pittsburgh before being drafted by the Bills in the 2021 NFL draft. Playing in the role of safety, he served as a reserve for much of last year but has been a part the Bills' starting line-up in 2022. He has also drawn praise for hosting annual Christmas toy drives in his hometown since before he was a paid athlete.

After he collapsed, an online GoFundMe page for the toy drive was reshared and has raised more than $600,000 in the space of an hour.

Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest after taking a hard hit, requiring CPR on their field.

(CNN) Former NFL player Coy Wire: "Never seen a response from a hit like that"
Former NFL player and CNN reporter Coy Wire expressed shock after the Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin collapsed during Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. “There didn't seem to be any direct hit to the head or neck area. His head didn't even look like it got jostled all that much. So, I can't assume what type of injury this might be,” Wire told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday.

Hamlin fell on his back on the field just moments after standing up following an open field tackle of Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins.

Wire, who played nine seasons in the NFL and currently serves as a CNN sports anchor, said the collapse was shocking. -- “Never seen a response from a hit like that,” he said.

Visibly emotional, Wire noted that sympathies should be sent to Hamlin’s family and his loved ones. “I'm trying to keep my composure for you because I think it's important that we send prayers, think about Damar, think about his family,” Wire told Cooper.

Wire also praised the NFL’s move to suspend the game after Hamlin's collapse. -- “I'm so proud that the NFL has suspended the game because I think maybe 10 years ago, that might not have happened,” he said. “The importance placed on players' safety nowadays, they stopped the game. I think that's progress.”

Gave me flashbacks to when I saw Rich Peverley and Fabrice Muamba go down in separate events.

I hope he'll be ok!!

Take a guess at what conspiracy theory's getting spun around at the moment.....yeah, Serafin's favorite bit of :censored: .

Disgusting political gamesmanship when someone's in critical condition.
I was talking to someone on Discord about it and I just straight-up said "there are some sick fucks out there".....

There absolutely are. One of the ones I posted above, Fabrice Muamba, when he collapsed while playing for my hometown team the entire football world came together in support of him, tributes from across the world poured in from average people to megastars of the game. That's what should be happening here! To hell with politics, let's hope the man, the person is going to be ok!

On the other hand....

...ESPN's Scott Van Pelt and Ryan Clark took the NFL to the woodshed tonight....

I'm just gonna say this. I know that I don't watch the NFL anymore, but while I was switching channels, it was very scary. The NFL need to stop thinking about themselves and how popular it is and need to talk about and discuss hard hits and hard tackles, because stuff like this needs to stop. Concussions is one thing, hard, brutal hits and tackles is another. Something needs to be done about this before it's too damn late.

(CNN) Buffalo Bills star Damar Hamlin remains in critical condition. Here's what you need to know
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, remains in critical condition in a Cincinnati hospital after suffering cardiac arrest mid-game on Monday night, his team said.

Hamlin's heartbeat was restored on the field after he collapsed, the Bills said.

Here's what you need to know:
--Hamlin's condition: The player remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit in critical condition, the Bills tweeted Tuesday. Hamlin's uncle told CNN that the player had to be resuscitated twice — once on the field, and a second time in the hospital. Hamlin sustained some damage to his lungs and is now on a ventilator to help with his breathing while sedated, his uncle said.
--Family thanks supporters: In a statement Tuesday, released via Hamlin's friend Jordon Rooney, the player's family expressed gratitude "for the love and support shown to Damar during this challenging time," and thanked fans for their prayers and millions of dollars in donations to his foundation's toy drive.
--No new date for game: The NFL said it "has made no decision regarding the possible resumption" of the Bills-Bengals game. It added that no changes have been made to the Week 18 NFL schedule.
--Focus on Hamlin: The NFL players' union said in a statement Tuesday that "our focus remains on Damar." The union added that it is in touch with the teams and the NFL to provide support for all players affected.
--Teammates rally: Hamlin's team landed back in Buffalo at 3:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, while several of his teammates chose to stay behind in Cincinnati . A source with the Bills said the players and staff are still processing what they witnessed Monday night and everyone was "exhausted."
