Obama: Nutrition bill vital to children's future

WASHINGTON -Thousands more children would get into school-based meal programs and those lunches and dinners would become more nutritious under a bill President Barack Obama signed into law Monday, part of an administration-wide effort to combat childhood obesity.



At a very basic level, this act is about doing what's right for our children, Obama said before signing the bill. The ceremony was moved from the White House, where most signings are held, to an elementary school in the District of Columbia to underscore the point.



Besides Obama, the bill also was a priority for his wife, Michelle, who launched a national campaign this year against childhood obesity.



We can agree that in the wealthiest nation on earth all children should have the basic nutrition they need to learn and grow, Mrs. Obama said. Nothing is more important than the health and well-being of our children. Nothing.



The $4.5 billion measure would expand free school meals for the needy and give the government power to decide what kinds of foods may be sold in schools.

Nobody is forcing the hungry kids to actually eat the food. There's plenty of tea if they'd prefer that...



...just expanding the criteria, so that more people who are actually poor, given the economic realities of today, to be able to choose to sign up for the service.



...it's kind of like people wanting to mandate that those that require public benefits get drug tests, and/or take birth control.



...if they're giving something out, makes sense that they decide what they're going to give...



...unless you think that when you go to the Salvation Army person ringing the bell at the front of the grocery store, they should dictate what you give them...

I'm so glad you mentioned that. I don't see the gov't dealing with that adequately but there are things we can individually do about it. I won't get into all of it but when I drive to another county, I carry a crate of water bottles I give out ... and socks I buy for them at the thrift stores. I don't seek the needy out, but I sure run across them. Every little bit helps and when the government doesn't prioritize needs we, as citizens, can do that on an individual basis. I admit I haven't always done that but in the past several years I have.



Geez, I even carry dry dog food and cat food too ...... I'm a bleeding heart ... conservative.

I guess in the end, the 'big government' will shrink up, when all we have is a bunch of obese kids that the military itself cites as a problem, because we won't have enough ready soldiers to deploy for any future defense needs as most of the potential recruits are growing up overweight...less spending on the military I guess...



Yeah, it would be nice to combat homelessness, but giving people a few bucks to have a place to live is that 'Nazi Communism' that we can't have around here...

They are public schools... government in some form is going to be the one deciding obviously.

May I ask what policies implemented here in the United States you deem socialist and what problems you have with them? (Not expecting a response.)
