Two quotes that do a good job of describing the speech:

‎If this tragedy prompts reflection and debate, as it should... let’s make sure it’s not on the usual plane of politics and point-scoring and pettiness that drifts away with the next news cycle.

‎We may not be able to stop all evil in the world, but I know that how we treat one another is entirely up to us.

Hmmmm, he didn't ask for reflection and debate regarding the Fort Hood muslim shooter. Now why is that?

My guess is there is another reason too.

He also used his remarks to bring the Federal capitol murder case against Loughner down in flames.

What?!?

John Boehner was invited to speak at the event, but decided it was more worth his time to attend a fund-raising cocktail party for the RNC.

From the Oh Please file.

A talking head on ABC's morning news show just called the Criminal Act in Tuscon last week a disaster while, at the same time, blaming the firearm for it.

Well, let's face it, let's take the gun out of his hands, and see if he can punch though Gifford's brain, punch that judge to death, and have those fists of fury take out that little girl.

I'm not anti-gun, I'm really not - I actually think the civilian populace needs GREATER access to firearms, but if you remove the gun, all else being equal, this incident would've ended up a lot different.

The dysfunction and problem existed long before the gun came into play, though.

The federal capital murder case against Loughner depends on whether or not the judge was there on official business.

Our Beautiful President, the smartest man to have ever held the office, said that Roll just stopped by to say hi to a friend.

Guess how far the defense will run with that to get the federal charges dismissed, never mind whether or not it was true.

The President has no bearing on a Federal criminal case of this nature, he offered extra-Judicial commentary - it wasn't a courtroom testimony. I guess basic court processes aren't something the average person has a grasp of, these days.

...and are you hitting on the President or something? Whomever was the smartest to hold office is a very nebulous assertion to make. I wouldn't put my money on Obama, but I wouldn't put my money on a lot of folk that have served in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Century.

It's a shame that Rush Limbaugh made him say all this in the House yesterday.

ABC News Jonathan Karl reports:

The newfound civility didn’t last long. Political rhetoric in Congress doesn’t get much nastier than the words of one House Democrat during the debate on repealing the health care law.

In an extraordinary outburst on the House floor, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) invoked the Holocaust to attack Republicans on health care and compared rhetoric on the issue to the work of infamous Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

“They say it's a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels, Cohen said. You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That's the same kind of thing. And Congressman Cohen didn’t stop there.

“The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it--believed it and you have the Holocaust. We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care. Politifact said the biggest lie of 2010 was a government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover, Cohen said.

Cohen made his comments late last night, but they have attracted no attention because his speech was made to a virtually empty House chamber with no reporters around to watch.

Well it is true that the American people are being consistently lied to by the right wing.

If you need the holocaust to support your argument it can't be too good...

Absolute truth eh? Lots of people'd probably commit suicide upon hearing it, whatever it might be.
