OpenAI has officially introduced real-time web search to ChatGPT, offering this feature initially to paid subscribers and SearchGPT waitlist users, with free, enterprise, and educational accounts gaining access soon. Rather than creating a standalone product, OpenAI has integrated web search into ChatGPT’s existing platform. The feature is designed to activate web results automatically based on query type, though users can also manually trigger a search. This move allows ChatGPT to close the competitive gap with AI tools like Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini, which already offer live internet access in conversations.

As AI-driven search intensifies among tech companies, OpenAI’s ChatGPT search lead, Adam Fry, demonstrated the functionality by searching for Apple’s stock and recent news. The results included an interactive stock graph, upcoming earnings, and clickable news citations. Another example showcased a search for Italian restaurants in San Francisco, displaying an interactive map with recommended locations. In both scenarios, Fry could refine results by asking follow-up questions, such as looking for more casual dining options.

The new search feature is available across all ChatGPT platforms, including iOS, Android, and desktop applications for macOS and Windows. Built with a blend of search technologies, including Microsoft’s Bing, the underlying model is a fine-tuned version of GPT-4, initially released in July to 10,000 testers under the name SearchGPT. In earlier reports, OpenAI was noted to be actively recruiting search talent from Google.

Previously, ChatGPT’s information was capped at knowledge ending in 2021 or 2023, depending on the model. OpenAI spokesperson Niko Felix explained that while real-time search will provide the latest updates, the company will continue to refresh the training data periodically, which is separate from the live search updates.
