A panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear that triggers severe physical reactions when there is no real danger or apparent cause. Panic attacks can be very frightening. When panic attacks occur, you might think you're losing control, having a heart attack or even dying.

Panic attacks typically begin suddenly, without warning. They can strike at almost any time — when you're driving the car, at the mall, sound asleep or in the middle of a business meeting. Panic attacks have many variations, but symptoms usually peak within 10 minutes.

Questions:

1. Have you ever experienced a panic attack?
2. What were the symptoms?
3. How do you deal with a panic attack?
 
I'd find myself panic quite frequently around other people while I was on my own. I used to not be able to do anything because of it. It's not as bad now though.

My last full panic attack was a year ago at a party, where I was ... not right in the head?
 
I panic and get nervous/anxious at times but I don't think I've ever had an actual panic attack.

Yes, Many times. Mostly last year and early this year.

Racing/pounding heart, so loud you think your heart will explode, Sweating, Shakes, Feel Sick, Literally thinking you are going to die, Complete fear.

3. How do you deal with a panic attack?

Ride it out, Try to breathe properly, focus my mind on something else.

Sounds very scary.

Are the attacks 'triggered' by anything in particular?

1. Yes, plenty.
2. Depends: sinking feeling in your gut, tingling in the extremities, racing heart beat, shallow breathing, elevated temperature, confusion, sweating--you name it.
3. I've been diagnosed with panic disorder, although I've treated it with medicine and cognitive behavioral therapy. I have a good handle on it now, although when I'm stressed and having a hard time in general, I get somewhat anxious. I don't get full blown panic attacks like I did 2 or so years ago (and I hope I don't ever again).

Anyway, the only way to truly "deal" with it is to face your fears. That's what they taught us in CBT. Find the tools/skills necessary to handle the stress and the anxiety in your life, realize that it's not going to go away but that you can learn to manage it, and do what needs to be done.
