This is why I buy any important books in hardcover form, like all of my Tolkien's, they're hardcover and kept in a cupboard to protect them. But just common books to read, I usually buy those in paperback unless I end up loving them, then I'll also buy a hardcoverI tend not to like paperbacks because they show wear and tear much more quickly, and then I feel like I need to buy a new book. There's something satisfying about hardcovers to me.
There's actually a third option that I've noticed has become more popular. My Tolkien's are these little almost Bible-like copies that are softcovers, but they're not paper. It's this kind of fake leather that is really pleasing to the touch. I have a few other books that are like this. Oh those are fantastic!! Going to have to grab some of them at some point. I wish they'd print more of his other works in editions like this, it's hard finding some of them in hardcover!
