Another OLD friend of our family is having a very hard time dealing with his death. They grew up together and until our other friend got very sick, still went to dinner together and ran around to rummage sales.

Oh how horrible. I hope you reach out and talk to him, and if he needs it, as Webster said, there are so many resources out there. Confidential ones, even. He doesn't need to feel alone!
Basically, you have to set a routine and stick to it but let it be flexible enough so that, when unforeseen events happen/come up, you can adapt and keep going.
I wish I could set a better routine for myself, but it's kind of hard when you have so much free time due to being unemployed, and live in a small/boring town, and having little to no friends to hang out with and no SO. I mainly stay at home and play on my computer or iPhone and it even gets a little boring doing the same old thing every day. Perhaps once I'm re-employed I can set a better routine and maybe make a friend or two at my new job for a more fulfilling routine.
