What are your opinions of admins installing PM logs to monitor all messages through the private message system?

I've never felt the need to do it on any of my forums. Private messages are meant to be private.

If someone is spamming, multiple people will report it & we can take away PM privileges from the spammer.

Yep. Privacy on the Internet is a myth. I don't mind as I've got nothing to hide, I think it's a good tool to keep an eye on things because who knows what's going on in them unless you can see them?

It's no ones business what's going on in them except the members involved in the PM. If a member is being harassed or is receiving PM advertising, it's up to the member to report it to the admin or staff member. When reported, that's when the member has decided to involve an outside party.

Per say to members are having an altercation, one decides to report it and I act on that report without seeing what that person has been saying to the one they reported. So to make sure I make a fair decision I want to see the whole story. If that makes sense.

Obviously this is an unlikely occurrence but it is still a good idea to be prepared etc.

You can't assume anything. You have to deal with the information that was reported.

Not really. They're not exactly encrypted, MyBB simply doesn't offer you an easy way of reading them.
We (that's you, me and Nebulous) can simply download the database and look through it if we want.

And, don't worry people, I have better things to do than invade your 'privacy'

I try to keep PM's private because what's said using the system is said in confidence. If someone is saying something related to me or any of the other staff members, I feel that they have the right for what's said to remain private.

That said, I don't encourage abuse of the system either. I always encourage users to report PMs if they are ever abused, and if needed, I will run a database query and export PMs for review.
