In the United States, and increasingly in the United Kingdom and Canada, prom (short for promenade)[1] is a semi-formal (black tie) dance or gathering of high school students. This event is typically held near the end of the senior year (i.e., the last year of high school). Prom figures greatly in popular culture and is a major event among high school students. High school juniors attending the prom may call it "junior prom" while high-school seniors may call it "senior prom" or "senior ball". In practice, this event may be a combined junior/senior dance.

At prom, a Prom Queen and Prom King may be revealed. These are honorary titles awarded to students elected in a school-wide vote prior to the prom, and seniors are usually awarded these titles.[2] Juniors may also be honored, but would be called "Prom Prince" or "Prom Princess." Other students may be honored with inclusion in a "Prom Court." The selection method for Prom Court is similar to that of Homecoming Queen/Princess, King, and Court. Inclusion in a Prom Court may be a reflection of popularity of those students elected and their level of participation in school activities, such as clubs or sports.[3][4] The Prom Queen and Prom King may be given crowns to wear. Members of the Prom Court may be given sashes to wear and photographed together.[5]

Similar events take place in many other parts of the world. In Australia, the terms school formal, and ball are most commonly used for occasions equivalent to the American prom, and the event is usually held for students in senior years. Many schools hold a formal graduation ball for finishing students at the end of the year in place of or as well as a formal. In Ireland a debutante ball may also be held. debutante balls are also arranged in Australia but these events are less common. The term "prom" is becoming more common in the UK and Canada due to the influence of US TV shows and movies.

Did you go to your prom? Did you have a nice time?

If you are younger, do you plan on going to the prom?

Nope, sadly didn't go to Junior or Senior prom. Wish I had though. Hell my sister didn't go to prom either. The fact she had to pay to get in to it is something I can't blame her for not wanting to attend.

I've never been to a school (High School or College) related:

Homecoming, Prom, Sadie Hawkins, Formal, "insert special occasion dance name here", etc.

That I wasn't Working At for either the food or bar caterer. And, of those, maybe twenty or so events over the years, most of them proved what I've said about them all along.

"most of those going spend a bunch of money and get all dressed up to be absolutely miserable for a couple of hours, and then end up pissed off at most of the rest of them."

Proms in my day are considered as a bunch of teenagers partying and kicking ass until they run out of alcohol or until there's a case of drunk people.

Found out my sister woulda had to pay 50 dollars just to go to prom.

I never went to any school dance.

This, it never seemed very appealing. My friends pretty much agreed.

Never went to prom, but the prom queen in my senior year for my school got killed in a car accident after the dance. Her passenger was not injured, but the other driver was sentenced to 5 years in prison for vehicular manslaughter.

Yeah, I don't even regret not going to one. Sometimes I'll hear people reminiscing about school in a sad way because they never went to prom... Who cares?

Indeed, prom definitely shouldn't be the most important thing you did at school.

Only time I ever went to a dance was when back during my 7th and 8th grade years they had a dance during the school hours.

Like square dancing class? I think we did that when I was in like 4th grade, for some reason the teacher wanted to teach us how to square dance.

The nearest thing I ever came to that sort of thing was the School Leaving 'Party', which was a compulsory attendance, so it was no real different than actually being at school, where you were told you HAD to enjoy yourself, whether you wanted to or not.
