Read the rules

Was viewing a forum that I was thinking about joining. There were three things that really turned me off:

  • Intro form - How to properly introduce yourself (since when do I need to be told how to introduce myself)
  • As soon as you create an intro, you get this: I suggest you read Rules/Guidelines and make an interview thread (very rude and what if I don't want to create an interview thread)
  • Post your picture: There is message in here from admin warning members not to comment on any posted picture. If you do, you face a week ban. (What's the harm in letting members comment on a posted picture. Why even bother posting a picture of yourself?)

Needless to say, I did not join this forum. Would you join this forum after reading the above?

No. I wouldn't. Sounds like a real turn off. I also hate forums where they have a box that appear's at the top of every page which tells you to read the rules, and won't go until you've reached a certain amount of posts.

Here's another rule I just found at a different forum than the one I mentioned previously:

All posts are pending moderator approval. No exceptions.

Let me ask you something...who the heck in their right mind would join this forum?

General Discussion. Not much discussion going on with that stupid rule!

Can't imagine how many moderators you'd need to approve every post on a decently sized forum

It's a decent size forum with four moderators. Funny, that there wasn't even ONE online when I looked at this forum. Can't imagine how long it must take to get your post approved. Could be months....

I put up the rules and if they do not obey them or do not read them then tough luck! That is their own fault. I do not do special last chances it's clear as the blue air in the header and it's easy to understand.

Those are the type of forums you join to troll and amuse yourself by carefully looking over their rules so you know what to do to be incredibly annoying and then laugh at their reactions.

If someone tells you to read the rules in your intro thread then simply respond that you don't know how to read. lol

A stupid post deserves a stupid post as a response imo.

One of my forum pet hates is a member or moderator telling me to read the rules (even politely - Oh please make sure you read the rules because we believe you to be ridiculously unintelligent), this is my introductory thread, dammit!

I'm with Nebulous on this one. It's not welcoming at all, and indeed, it is a turnoff. It's like going into a bank and the security officer saying hello and then telling you not to rob the bank or you'll get shot. I mean, welcome someone, but don't throw a code of conduct at them the first day they join. I'm sure they agreed to the TOS before completing their registration, so it's unwelcoming and unnecessary to pester people about reading the rules upon their arrival.
