What are you currently doing? Renting or owning?

What are the pro's and con's of each?

I own my own home. I had it built and own it outright.

Pro: It's mine and I can do whatever improvements I want to it.

Con: Homes are expensive to upkeep & it's my responsibility to pay

I used to rent an apartment for $750 per month.

Pro: The apartment complex maintained the grounds and made repairs as necessary to the apartment.

Con: It wasn't mine and was costing $9k a year to live there. I decided that I would rather carry a mortgage (if I had to) than give my money to a landlord.

I wished I owned a home but I dont think I will ever be able to do that unless I find a wife with good credit and a good job. Anyone here meet that criteria?

Anyway there is many times where I have been thankful that I didnt own the house I lived in as sometimes things can go wrong and can end up costing the owner hundreds to thousands of dollars. Also I prefer living somewhere where they have someone do the landscaping and upkeep of the property. I work 2 jobs, I only have 2 days off to spend with my daughter, also I run a cool forum =P so yard work does not really fit in to my schedule.

That's why I had my house custom built and have home owners insurance and extended warranties on all major appliances. I live on 23 wooded acres and have a landscaping company upkeep my property.

I have my own house because it is my investment. Every now and again, a “rent-or-buy” assessment will come out on a business news website. Many of them are mendacious if not outright propaganda, as most leave out a lot of data and hidden costs of home ownership. For me, there can be no financial answer as to whether it is cheaper to buy or rent. However, there are considerations such as emotional status and flexibility which can sometimes outweigh decisions that may or may not be financially justified.

I rented up until the day I got married because she wanted a house. To me it never made sense. I pay for that house that is mine but yet the government can charge me a property tax that seems they can willy nilly increase on me when they feel fit to do so. I could understand paying a one time fee out right or in the mortgage. But to pay the government for life that is mine just irritates me to no end. But I wanted a blissful and happy marriage so we got a home that I still feel like I am paying rent on it is just now I have to make all the repairs myself. She is happy so I am willing to continue it. But otherwise no way would I ever own a house to just have my money stolen from our thieving government!

I rent a bedsit - One room - bed, lounge area and kitchen all in 1 room, shared bathroom.
Costs me £280 a month, bills included in price.

Pros - I have my own indepence, it's cheap, I live out in the beautiful country.

Cons - Loud lodger above me, no phone signal as out in country, I would rather not share a bathroom with someone.

I would never be able to afford my own place unless I suddenly came into alot of money. But even then I think I would prefer to rent. Alot less hassle.

Yes and the link has been removed and the smell has been eliminated.
