People convicted but not jailed for rioting could be stripped of benefits under plans considered by Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith.

He said he would prefer it that such an approach, if adopted, was carried out by the courts and not the government.

Currently, those jailed lose benefits but other punishments, like community service, do not prompt such a loss.

It comes as a split between Tories and Lib Dems has emerged over plans to evict families of rioters.

A wave of rioting, looting and arson spread from London to parts of the East and West Midlands, Merseyside, Bristol, Manchester and Gloucester last week.

The welfare secretary said he would like to see a system in which benefits were removed as part of the judicial process.

But as was said in the article, if people are left

without their benefit, would that not encourage

more thefts and violence etc ?

They can't expect to riot and just get a slapped wrist and told not to it again. They need a punishment that will cause them discomfort.

I agree, the do need a punishment that will hit where it hurts,

but if they are to lose all their benefits, so leaving them without money,

I think they are just going to 'steal' what they want, which means

the people they steal from will suffer too.

Removing benefits will lead to two possible scenarios. They either figure out that they can't do this shit and get away with it, so they try and get back on the straight and narrow, get a job, and be a better use to society, or they keep doing it and get thrown in jail to be raped by Little Bubba. I'm fine with either choice. You do the crime, you pay the price.

Personally, I think all benefits should be cut from everyone unless it's proven that they truly need it, and that they will use it correctly. I work in a store, and so many cunts who are disabled come in EVERY DAY buying crates of beer. Hmm I wonder why they're disabled...oh that's right, they're fuck-drunk all the time. >.>

There's the problem in a nut shell. Why would people convicted of rioting NOT be jailed?

Because so far they've arrested over 3000 people, I believe. We simply don't have the jail space (or funding to take care of the little fucks) to convict everyone. And we don't have things like Alcatraz, so we can't dump them in the ocean either.
