School Lunch

If you are still in school, how are your school lunches?
If you aren't, what do you remember about school lunches?

Was it Good? Bad? Okay food? :s

The school lunches I had were okay, but I usually took the healthier options

When I started school, you took your lunch. Period.

At the beginning of the program (mid to late 1960s in my home town, and about the same time where my wife went to school, Illinois and Mississippi respectively) the 'hot lunches' were fixed on site, in the school kitchen, by a 'lunch lady' employee of the district and a rotating squadron of volunteer mothers and grandmothers from food ordered en bulk from district suppliers.

The meals were good, and reasonably priced.

And then later, at least in Illinois, everything was consolidated to a central kitchen. The quality immediately nosedived and by the middle seventies, became the joke they have been ever since.

In MS, the process of making the meals crappy and not worth eating took a bit longer, but it happened there as well.

At my daughter's school in Delaware, at one point several parents, me included, went to a school board meeting and demanded that the principal eat at least one unannounced lunch a week in the cafeteria. At first, he refused, but then gave in and a month or so later admitted that the quality and presentation of the lunches was less than it should be.

The food didn't get any better, but at least they were aware of what the CONTRACTOR was putting on the kid's plates.

After that, my daughters 'brown bagged' it for a couple of years until they went to the Charter High School, where the food was only marginally better.

We had gone full circle.

I remember have very little money, I spent abit at the tuck shop and then didn't have enough for a proper meal at lunch :/

The lunch from the first school I went to was god-awful. The food was horribly prepared from cans and boxes, like it's not even homemade. The lunches were served in Styrofoam plates and plastic forks, both of which made in China.

The other school's lunch is pretty good. They have real trays, but plastic forks. The food was well prepared.

School lunches are terrible. They have so many restrictions on what they can put into their food so the options are limited. On top of that, they buy the cheapest, low quality ingredients to make their slop.

Our lunch break is 45 minutes and the lunch food here is pretty good.

In high school we didn't have school lunch but I heard that in the university the food is good.

Thankfully, no. I don't imagine I would've gotten much food down that way.

If your family didnt have much money then you should have been eligible for the free (or reduced price) lunch program... Or did they not have that?
