I think they should be compensated for the time and effort they put into it, let alone over the emotional distress caused by being fooled into believing they won.

It depends on the jackpot. If it's an incredibly high amount (we're talking hundreds of millions of dollars worth), then they should get SOMETHING. But if it's like 10k, then no.
